Before the war, Mass Fusion was the primary power supplier to Boston and most of the Commonwealth. It is the tallest building in Boston. With the proceeds from an enormously lucrative line of fusion wells, engines, and cores, this structure—their corporate headquarters—was built. Since the war, the structure has fallen into disrepair, though the reactor level hasn’t yet been breached.
At ground level, Gunners fight through the rubble-strewn streets. Should you arrive on the roof (when the quest is active), prepare to fight your chosen rival faction, and hunt down a few choice items (including a Nuka Cherry). Beware the oil, gas leaks, and explosive barrels, or use them to your advantage.
The interior of the tower houses a huge number of office rooms within a central atrium and an impressive sky elevator.
Before the quest, you enter Mass Fusion from the ground floor and work your way up. On Level 5, look for the main trunk of items guarded by a Gunner commander, a Mini Nuke, and the Bobblehead, perched precariously atop the statue that looks out over the central atrium. You can’t go any higher unless the quest is active (or you have a Jetpack), so take the double doors to the west to exit out onto the exterior balcony, where you can fast-travel away. Or take the elevator on this level back down to the ground floor.
If you are here on the quest and have access to the upper levels, be sure to clear them of the scavengeable items as shown on the maps. Descend through the building, using the Executive ID Card you found on the roof to access the elevator to the Reactor Level. Come back with a jetpack, and you can reach some additional rewards on the highest levels of the building, which are otherwise inaccessible. These include a set of Freefall Armor for your legs inside the office of Jack Rockford on the 28th floor. Can you find it?
This location cannot be reached unless one of the quests is active. Make sure to grab a Hazmat Suit from the locker room or one of the control rooms before entering the decontamination arches—the radiation level in the Reactor Chamber is extreme. If you can manage the (Master) lock, use the terminals in the Control Room and the side office to disable the security system, or prepare for a difficult fight with robots on your way out.
One steamer trunk can be found on the walkway above the decontamination hall. Another is submerged in the reactor room itself-- even with a hazmat suit, the radiation here is bad.
