Trail of Terror
If you want to fight the Institute, you’ve been told you should find the Railroad. The only clue you have is “Follow the Freedom Trail.” The tourist trail starts at Boston Common due east of Diamond City.
This quest can start in a variety of ways:
- You investigate the area around Park Street Station, either during your exploration or during Main Quest: Unlikely Valentine.
- If you speak with Doctor Amari at the start of Main Quest: The Molecular Level, she indicates the Railroad faction would be helpful to your cause.
- You overhear folks in Diamond City Market (at the Market or in the Dugout Inn), or guards in Goodneighbor
Head to Boston Common, adjacent to Park Street Station. Locate this fountain with the scrawled board that reads “At Journey’s End Follow Freedom’s Lantern.” On the ground in front of that is a Freedom Trail marker reading “A7.”
Follow the red brick line along the sidewalk around the perimeter of Boston Common. Locate Massachusetts State House and the marker “L4.”
Follow the trail to the Old Granary Burying Ground and the marker “A2.” Watch for the ferocious ferals.
Follow the trail to the Old State House and the marker ”O6.” The disgusting displays of entrails indicate Super Mutants are active here.
Follow the trail to the Old Corner Bookstore and the marker “3I.” Expect confrontations with Wild Mongrels, Feral Ghouls, Super Mutants, and Raiders.
Follow the trail to Faneuil Hall and the marker “5R.” There’s not a friendly face to be found; deal with Feral Ghouls, Super Mutants, and Mutant Hounds. Be particularly careful of the Super Mutant Suicider here; shoot the bomb out of his hand, or backpedal to avoid a disgustingly messy and violent attack.
The trail continues to what’s left of Paul Revere’s House and the marker “8D.” Beware of Mutant Hounds and Super Mutants.
The trail concludes at the Old North Church and the marker “1R.” Note the lantern sign painted on the wall by the door. Enter the church.
New Friends in North End
The old ruined church has Feral Ghouls lurking throughout the hall and lower catacombs. Follow the lantern markers downstairs to the Freedom Trail Ring, and spin it either clockwise or counterclockwise to spell out “RAILROAD.” Moments later, you make contact with the Railroad. Answer their leader Desdemona how you wish:
After more talking and agreeing to help her cause, you’re tentatively welcomed in.
