4. Talk to people of [the owned settlement]
5. Talk to Preston Garvey

Visit the indicated settlement and immediately access their workshop. Build defenses until the objective is satisfied.
Wait (sit or sleep if no enemies arrive immediately) awhile after a job well done. Then help defeat one of the following types of foes: Raiders, Feral Ghouls, Super Mutants, Gunners, the Brotherhood of Steel (if this faction is hostile to you), synths (if the Institute is hostile to you or has been destroyed). After you wipe out the incursion, speak to the settlers; then report back to Preston Garvey for some Caps.
