By Any Means Necessary
This quest becomes available during Main Quest: Best Left Forgotten, when you discover the location of the Nuclear Launch Key or recover the Wind Turbine Code. If you’ve agreed to help DiMA replace High Confessor Tektus, complete Main Quest: Reformation to determine the fate of the Island. Otherwise, you have a very important choice ahead of you. Before you choose a course of action, consider tending to any unfinished business you might have with Far Harbor, the Nucleus, and Acadia.
Relations between Far Harbor and the Nucleus are only growing worse, and it seems unlikely that the two communities can coexist for much longer. However, now that you’ve recovered DiMA’s forgotten memories, you have the power to resolve this conflict once and for all.
Option #1: Destroy the Nucleus
The people of Far Harbor have more than their share of troubles, but the entire community agrees that life on the Island would be much simpler without the Children of the Atom. If you choose to ally yourself with Far Harbor, use the information from DiMA’s early memories to rid the Island of the Nucleus and its inhabitants.
Prelaunch Preparation
One of DiMA’s early memories mentions a Nuclear Launch Key hidden in the Harbor Grand Hotel safe room. Travel to the hotel and deal with its super mutant occupants as you make your way to the marked room on the second floor. Use the keypad in the corner of the room to reveal the hidden safe room.
Access the safe room’s terminal and listen to the security recording to learn the location of the Nuclear Launch Key. If you like, you can eject the Holotape to add the recording to your collection.
The Nuclear Launch Key is locked in a safe within the wreckage of a sunken ship near Fringe Cove Docks. Travel to the marked location, swim down to the ship, and retrieve the launch key from the ship’s safe.
Once you’ve obtained the Nuclear Launch Key, you must decide what to do with it. You can:
- Confront DiMA about the Nuclear Launch Key. DiMA pleads for you to refrain from using the key. However, a persuasive argument (Medium) might convince DiMA that the Nucleus must be destroyed. If you succeed, return to DiMA after the Nucleus has been destroyed to receive some caps (about 500).
- Use the Nuclear Launch Key to activate the console in High Confessor Tektus’ room. Doing so causes all Children of Atom to become hostile, making it necessary to fight your way out of the Nucleus as the launch sequence counts down.
- Speak to High Confessor Tektus about the Nuclear Launch Key. You can then hand over the key—preventing the Nucleus’ destruction—or you can attempt to persuade Tektus to use the key for Division (Hard). If you succeed, you’re free to leave the Nucleus while Tektus prepares his followers for their final act of devotion.
If you surrender the Nuclear Launch Key to High Confessor Tektus, he urges you to destroy Far Harbor. If you use (or convince Tektus to use) the key, exit the base and wait for the missile to detonate. When the Nucleus is destroyed, the quest ends and you receive the Far Harbor Survivalist perk.
Option #2: Destroy Far Harbor
High Confessor Tektus considers Far Harbor’s fog condensers to be an affront to Atom. If you chose to ally yourself with the Children of Atom, use what you learned from DiMA’s forgotten memories to disable Far Harbor’s defenses.
One of DiMA’s early memories mentions a code capable of deactivating Far Harbor’s fog condensers. Travel to the marked location, unearth the buried container, and retrieve the Wind Turbine Code.
Once you’ve obtained the Wind Turbine Code, you must choose what to do with it. You can:
- Confront DiMA about the Wind Turbine Code. DiMA urges you not to use it, but a persuasive argument might convince him that Far Harbor needs to be destroyed (Medium). If you succeed, return to DiMA after disabling the fog condensers to receive some caps (about 500).
- Speak to Captain Avery about the Wind Turbine Code. During this conversation, you can threaten to use the code in an attempt to extort Avery (Medium). Otherwise, you can promise not to use the code or refuse to commit either way.
- Travel directly to the Wind Farm Maintenance facility and use the code to disable Far Harbor’s fog condensers.
If you choose to deactivate Far Harbor’s fog condensers, travel to the Wind Farm Maintenance facility east of Acadia. When you first enter the structure, a disabled security door prevents you from reaching the turbine controls. Search the storage area along the hallway’s north edge to find three Industrial-Grade Fuses. Grab the fuses, and then locate the fuse box in the utility area to the south. Collect the nearby Industrial-Grade Fuse from the nearby table, and insert all four fuses into the fuse box. Return to the security door, press the nearby button, and continue into the next area.
Neutralize the facility’s defenses and proceed to the marked Turbine 003 Regulator Terminal. Use DiMA’s code to override the turbine controls and deactivate Far Harbor’s fog condensers. Doing so ensures the demise of Far Harbor, making you an enemy of the town. Travel to the Nucleus and report your success to High Confessor Tektus to receive a unique piece of armor and a new perk. If you’ve reached the rank of “Inquisitor,” you’re granted the Inquisitor of Atom perk. Otherwise, you’re rewarded with the Crusader of Atom perk.
