Knight Varham’s Resting Spot
Three years ago, the last Brotherhood recon team sent to the Commonwealth went missing. This quest begins in one of three ways:
- You stumble upon one of the recon team without knowledge of this quest. Report your discovery to Paladin Danse or Captain Kells and begin this quest.
- You complete either Brotherhood of Steel Radiant Quest: Quartermastery or Cleansing the Commonwealth, and speak to Paladin Danse or Captain Kells.
- You complete Brotherhood of Steel Quest: Show No Mercy and speak to Captain Kells.
If you haven’t met the Brotherhood yet (or sided against them), you can still complete this quest. If you later decide to join up, you can tell Danse or Kells about your discovery and receive your reward.
The following investigations can occur in any order.
Head to the West Everett Estates close to Malden Middle School, near Med-Tek Research, in North Central Commonwealth. Explore until you find a distress signal, and tune your radio to it. There are Super Mutants active in this area, so be careful.
Listen for the ping. Follow it to the Brotherhood of Steel Battle Site, a burned-out structure southeast of Med-Tek Research. Examine Knight Varham and listen to the Holotape you find on him. Report this or continue your searching.
The Resting Place of Knight Astlin
Head to the National Guard Training Yard in the North Central Commonwealth Zone. Beware of Feral Ghouls and turrets. Tune your radio to the distress signal and listen for the ping. Follow it to the National Guard Recruitment Office. Fend off any ferals before searching Knight Astlin and listening to her Holotape.
Sitting a Spell with Scribe Faris
Head to the nearby Revere Satellite Array. Beware of a heavy Super Mutant presence. Follow the distress signal to a shack perched on one of the satellite arrays. Examine Scribe Faris and listen to his Holotape. You receive Recon Bunker Access Code 429A.

The Bunker of Brandis
The Bunker Access Code refers to Recon Bunker Theta, also in the vast North Central Commonwealth. Input access code 429A into the terminal to enter. Inside is Paladin Brandis. You can:
- Mention his name, and solve the standoff peacefully.
If the standoff ends in violence, gather the Paladin’s unique weapon after the fight:
If you speak to him, you can:
- Finish the conversation as you wish. Give him his team’s Holotags if you wish.
If Paladin Danse is accompanying you on this quest, speak to him about Paladin Brandis afterward. If Main Quest: Act I is active, return to Cambridge Police Station for your reward from Paladin Danse:
If Main Quest: Act II is active, return to the Prydwen for your reward from Captain Kells:
Steadfast Brotherhood of Steel Combat Armor Chest Piece
If you convinced Paladin Brandis to rejoin the Brotherhood, you can later meet him in the Prydwen’s mess hall, where he will give you his unique gun—Survivor’s Special. He will also fight with the Brotherhood during the Brotherhood of Steel Main Quests.
