Going Underground

Over in Goodneighbor, behind the two locked warehouses to the southeast, is a dingy alley with a metal door at the end of it. Bobbi No-Nose lives here, and she’s looking for someone to help her with some tunneling work. Agree to start this quest.

Enter the basement, into the Dig area, and join in. You won’t be using a shovel, though; there’s a small infestation of Mirelurks to remove. Bobbi comes in afterward and promotes you.

Head west across Boston to visit Diamond City, where Bobbi is hanging out at the market. She tells you the real nature of the job—or heist—and needs you to recruit someone named Mel who’s locked up in Diamond City Security.

Enter the security office, and speak with Mel, who’s behind bars. You can:

  • (Expert) Hack the terminal and start the Protectron unit, keeping the security guards busy while you free Mel.
  • Speak to a security guard: (300 Caps) Bribe the guard.
  • Or pickpocket a key from a the guard, or steal a key from the desk inside the security office, and unlock the cell.

After recruiting Mel in Diamond City, return to the dig site under Goodneighbor, where you’re introduced to Mel’s digging friend, Sonya. What follows is a lengthy and dangerous series of tunneling stops interspersed with some underground exploration. In each chamber, inspect the rock wall for a “fragile” section, send Sonya to dig the wall out, and proceed deeper into the sewers. Mirelurks are active here.

Keep digging until you break into a section of old subway tracks and a station populated by Feral Ghoul commuters. The plan is still to find fragile walls, dig them out, and proceed to new areas. Continue until you reach the wall to the strong room. This last dig tires Sonya out considerably.

The Full Story in the Strong Room

Look for the metal “exit” door into the strong room and climb out into NH&M Freight Depot. Be ready for a confrontation with Fahrenheit, Mayor Hancock’s main squeeze. It seems the situation regarding whose valuables you were stealing wasn’t fully explained to you. You can:

  • Side with Bobbi and remove any threats in the chamber (watch for flamers and exploding barrels in your vicinity), and claim your share of the loot.

Bottlecaps (approx. 200)

  • Side with Fahrenheit, remove anyone having a problem with your change of allegiance, and speak with Fahrenheit, who’s happy you made the choice and grants you the following:

Unique Weapon: Ashmaker

Once your decision is made, the quest is over. Of course, your choices directly affect your standing with Mayor Hancock of Goodneighbor, so expect repercussions. These post-quest activities are detailed in the Goodneighbor quest—Miscellaneous: Recruiting Hancock.
