A Pet Project
Once you’ve joined the Children of Atom, speak to Sister Mai and tell her you’re looking to lend a hand. It turns out that Sister Mai has spent some time trying to get the Nucleus’ decontamination arch back online. She’s already managed to bypass the arch’s filter–ensuring that the device will irradiate the user with Atom’s glow–but she’ll need an industrial pump regulator to complete her repairs. Sister Mai hopes you’d be willing to search the Vim! Pop Factory for the equipment she needs, and she’s prepared to offer a custom Radium Rifle in exchange for your services.
If you’re up to the task, travel to the Vim! Pop Factory to begin your search. The pump regulator can be found in an office overlooking the factory’s mixing vats, so consider entering the building via the loading dock. Use one of the available ramps or staircases to reach the raised walkways, and then make your way to the marked location along the factory’s east edge.
Pump Regulator
Travel back to the Nucleus, speak to Sister Mai, and let her know you’ve recovered the pump regulator. She asks if you’d be willing to install the device. You can agree to do so, or you can demand some extra Bottlecaps for your trouble.
When you’re ready, agree to install the pump regulator to receive your promised reward: a unique Radium Rifle.
To finish the job, you’ll need to venture into the radioactive area at the bottom of the nucleus. Take whatever precautions you feel are necessary, and then head down and inspect the broken pump regulator.
Depending on your mechanical aptitude, there are up to two ways to complete this quest. You can fulfil Sister Mai’s wishes by simply installing the new pump regulator, or–with an Intelligence rating of 7 or more–you can reverse Mai’s bypass, allowing the decontamination arch to operate as intended.
