  • Vault 81

Part 1: Vault 81

While traveling in the western Commonwealth, locate the Caravan Stop and entrance to Vault 81 and enter. Try to activate the vault door controls, and you’re stopped by Officer Edwards and Overseer McNamara. You can:

Give them three Fusion Cores in return for letting you in.

You’re welcomed into Vault 81, which impressively seems to still be fully functioning. Speak to the Overseer, receiving payment for your Fusion Cores. You are now free to move about the vault, and Side Quest: Vault 81 concludes.

Bottlecaps (100)

Miscellaneous: The Friendly Folks of Vault 81

Say hello to Miranda, Neil, and Officer Edwards if you wish. Access the elevator to the atrium. At this point you are accosted by Austin, a child who offers to show you around the vault (Vault 81 Freeform Quest: Vault 81 Tour). You can:

  • Accept or refuse.

Complete this objective by following him to the end of his tour. If you break off the tour, the objective fails. During or after the tour, you can optionally meet the following Vault Dwellers (Location Quests):

  • Calvin the maintenance man. He needs tools you scavenge and will pay you for any you bring back.
  • Alexis and Holt Combes who run the Depot. She is a trader.
  • Horatio: You can change your appearance at his barber’s shop.
  • Maria, who runs the cafeteria. She is a trader.
  • Katy, the teacher in the classroom. Complete Miscellaneous Quest: Short Stories for a copy of Grognak the Barbarian.
  • Dr. Penske runs the hydroponics lab. She asks you to taste a Mutfruit for her. Answer how you wish. She needs fertilizer you scavenge and will pay you for any you bring back.
  • Bobby and Tina DeLuca are in the reactor area. Bobby will buy chems off you. Tina wants Bobby off the Jet and Buffout.

As you explore Vault 81, the dwellers start to request you go see Dr. Forsythe in the clinic. Ready for a syringe without a load of chems? Then agree to give blood.

You can also eavesdrop on the Vault Dwellers, listening to conversations through one-way windows, and learning about the original purpose of the Vault.

Hole in the Wall

Leave Vault 81, explore for for a little while, beyond the rock walls of the entrance, then return to Vault 81. The situation seems a little more frantic; dwellers are talking about Austin’s condition. Visit the clinic to witness a discussion between Forsythe, Penske, and Bobby about a newly discovered secret part of the vault.

Agree to help. Follow Bobby DeLuca until he opens a secret wall to a hidden part of Vault 81. Put on your best Molerat exterminating gear and enter Secret Vault 81. Though there are machine-gun turrets and a Protectron to worry about, your main threats are some specially bred Vault 81 Lab Molerats.

Head steadily through the secret vault until you find the Vault 81 Secure Access Terminal. You can:

  • (Expert) Hack this to unlock the door.
  • Locate a Holotape from the lab chamber on this level, and use that to access the terminal and unlock the door.

Once inside the inner laboratory area, you’re greeted by the one remaining scientist in this part of the vault. After you abate all Molerat threats, Curie unlocks the door. When you explain what you’re here for, she gives it to you.

Vault 81 Cure

Ride up the elevator with Curie, returning to Dr. Forsythe. You can:

  • Keep the cure.
  • Or conclude this quest and hand over the cure. Austin is healed, a grateful Dr. Forsythe rewards you with a unique weapon, and Overseer McNamara gives you a room in Vault 81.

Unique Weapon: Syringer Rifle

Your own personal Vault quarters

Companion: Curie
