This quest is available if you’ve been kicked out of the Institute for any reason (declining Father’s initial offer, during a chat with Father when The Battle of Bunker Hill occurs, or by exercising violence against a scientist. Speak to Preston Garvey about this predicament. He has two answers:
- He believes the Minutemen aren’t strong enough to tackle the Institute yet. You must recruit and build up more settlements, such as this one at Kingsport Lighthouse.
- Or, if you have eight or more settlements, he immediately warns you about an Institute attack on the Castle, and Minutemen Quest: Defend the Castle becomes available.
