Ready for a Rootin’ Tootin’ Good Time?
Enter Dry Rock Gulch and head left to meet Sheriff Eagle or right to Sheriff Hawk, and have a chat with either of them. Feel free to eradicate any bloodworms that decide to make an appearance. The Sheriff asks if you’re able to help, so answer in the affirmative if you wish, or use your Robotics Expert Perk to gain a full knowledge of the forthcoming objectives. There are three main activity centers: Doc Phosphate’s Saloon, Giddyup Kid’s Corral, and One-Eyed Ike’s Quick-Draw contest.
Whether the Sheriff has spilled the beans regarding the rest of the mission or not, you’re given a natty western outfit and cowboy hat to (optionally) wear, and can begin exploring in earnest. Visit all three of the pertinent locations in any order you like.
One-Eyed Ike: Ready to Slap Iron and Duel?
Head down the main street until you spot One-Eyed Ike, a Protectron who wants to see how you’ll handle a quick-draw duel. After he counts to three, you’ll draw and shoot. You can:
- Agree, take your position after equipping the Western Revolver that One-Eyed Ike gives you, and holster the weapon (don’t forget to equip it first!). After the count to three, draw and fire at Ike if you want to completely play along, or simply have the gun ready to fire, hitting Ike as soon as he finishes saying “three.” Succeed and you receive part of the combination for the safe, as well as some additional ammunition for this revolver. Fail, and you repeat the duel.
- Use the Robotics Expert to override and skip the duel, gathering the safe combination piece without the need for gunplay.
Doc Phosphate: The Friendliest Bartender in Town
Dash straight ahead from One Eyed Ike’s and into Doc Phosphate’s Saloon. Feel free to check his terminal, then speak to the Doc himself; this Protectron is tending bar, and wants you to have a go. You need to deliver three orders of drinks. Are you game? You can:
- Agree, and begin the drinks delivery detailed below.
- Use your Robotics Expert to override and skip the bartending, taking the safe combination piece without the need for traipsing across town.
Serving Prospector Owen’s Drinks
Assuming you’re up for the bartending job, head upstairs and around the balcony, and hand over a thirst-quenching drink to Prospector Owen. He certainly looks like he needs it!
Serving Miss Trixie’s Drinks
Exit the saloon, head down the main street, and go into the Blacksmith’s where Miss Trixie seems to be particularly parched. Slam down a bottle and continue your serving.
Serving Handy Hank’s Drinks
Scoot across to the barn opposite the blacksmith’s and look for Handy Hank. He’s certainly stopped doing his job. Perhaps a Nuka-Cola Wild will perk him right up? After placing it on the table, return to the saloon and collect the safe combination piece from Doc Phosphate. Play along if you wish during the conversation. Then grab a Nuka-Cola Wild or six for the road.
The Giddyup Kid: Corralling Buttercups Before Sundown
Head right (south) as you exit the saloon, easily locating The Giddyup Kid in the Buttercup corral. All his Buttercups have fled the corral, and they love the taste of Nuka-Cola, so he hints that the horses might be in or around the park’s refreshment stands. What do you say, deputy? You can:
- Agree, and start your search, heading directly to the concession stand behind the corral, where the hindquarters of a Buttercup can be seen sticking out of a trash bin under a tree near a Cappy statue. Take it back and drop it into the corral. Or drop any Buttercup you’ve already collected. The Giddyup Kid is suitably thrilled, and offers a safe combination piece as your reward.
- Use your Robotics Expert Perk to skip this tomfoolery, ignore the corralling and gather the third safe combination piece.
Mining for Bloodworms
You’re now able to get the key to Mad Mulligan’s Mine, so head east and south into the Dry Rock Gulch Theater, ridding the area of ants if you need to, and cross the open theater to the barn opposite with the safe in it. With all three parts of the safe combination, the safe opens and yields a key to the mine. You can grab a personal log from Jesse and Caleb in the nearby lockers before you go, if you wish.
Move out of the theater heading roughly north, passing the Nuka-Cola stand and the Blacksmith’s, and into Mad Mulligan’s Minecart Coaster. Unlock the red door with the key, then head left up into the mine tunnels. Search Terry Tanaka’s corpse for a key (inside a tunnel alcove), then proceed to remove the bloodworms before exploring a diorama with a hut (with a hidden Cappy sign) and a waterfall.
Continue around the wooden steps into the mine, heading upwards, and into the chamber with the lit sign for the coaster. Slay the bloodworms in the vicinity. Among these beasts is a Queen; the source of the bloodworm infestation inside this part of the theme park. Defeat this foe and any of her larvae (these are optional kills).
Cowboy Up
You can further explore the mine area, gathering items and an employee key if you wish, but the Sheriffs need your assistance. Head out via the terminal and souvenir shop (check here for a medallion behind the chained door), and return to either sheriff. You can:
- Let him know you’ve completed the mine clear-out. You’re then able to raise the flag and assign a Raider gang to this part of the park.
- Choose to kill the Sheriff, and all the cowboy Protectrons you’ve spoken to throughout your time in the park, if this charade is getting you down.
The flag pole itself is close to Sheriff Hawk’s patrol path, atop the theater; access it from the leaning ladder at the top of the concrete bleachers. Once a faction flag has been raised up the red signal flagpole, this quest concludes.
