The Right Tools for the Job
The Mariner is responsible for the important but thankless job of maintaining the Hull—a defensive wall that prevents the Island’s most dangerous inhabitants from wandering into Far Harbor. After the latest skirmish, the Mariner believes the Hull would benefit from some long overdue repairs. The job requires a rare set of prewar tools stashed in the Eagle’s Cove Tannery, and the Mariner is willing to pay 450 caps if you manage to procure them.
The tools the Mariner needs are located on the main structure’s lower level. If you’re handy with a bobby pin, you can enter the covered area on the building’s south side and unlock the basement door (Master). Otherwise, use the main entrance to enter the tannery and fight your way to the interior staircase.
The area is infested with Feral Ghouls—no matter which path you take, you’re sure to encounter several of these foul creatures. While most ghouls drop useful items, pay special attention to the Glowing One variant waiting in the basement. After you defeat this formidable foe, search its remains to find a key to the building’s southern entrance. Collect the nearby Power Tools, sweep the area for useful items, and then use your preferred exit to head back outside.

The Mariner isn’t the only one interested in a set of functional power tools. If you’re more interested in earning caps than gaining friends, search the area outside of the tannery for Machete Mike. This would-be craftsman is willing to buy the tools for 2,000 caps. After a bit of haggling, he might even go as high as 2,750 (Medium). Of course, there are consequences to breaking your deal with the Mariner. Selling to Machete Mike damages your reputation with Far Harbor and prevents the Mariner from offering additional tasks. Alternatively, you can choose to kill Machete Mike and take all his caps. But if you decide to kill him you will not receive any further quests from the Mariner. This can impact the story later as the Mariner reveals she suspects you murdered Machete Mike.
If you choose to honor your deal with the Mariner, return to Far Harbor and deliver the power tools to collect the agreed-upon reward. Doing so improves your reputation with Far Harbor and helps ensure that the Mariner will offer more work in the future.
