Each character can be leveled up in two different ways.
Ranks
The first card you acquire for a character begins at Level 1. Character cards display the character’s name, followed by a Roman numeral indicating its level. For example, a Level 5 Human Male Vanguard card appears as “Human Male Vanguard—V.”
Each card level comes with a special bonus that grants the player additional cosmetic options, as well as a few bonus skill points. Cards can be leveled up 10 times.

Character Experience Level
When you use a character in a mission, any experience earned during that mission is applied to that specific character. Characters can reach a maximum of 20 in experience levels. While you gain no buffs directly from new levels, each time you level up, you gain an additional three skill points to use on power and skill upgrades. Even with a fully upgraded character card, you can’t fully upgrade every skill tree to Level 20. This means you must plot out your character goals early in the game. If you find yourself not using too many of your powers during battle, try investing in passive skills. These benefit your character by providing different buffs that don’t need to be activated and bonuses to things like damage, health, and shields. Using your powers often? Aim for the ends of the skill trees with your favorite skills. Rank 6 skills sometimes add new abilities, allowing you to prime or detonate enemies and increasing your overall combat effectiveness. Make it through all seven waves of a mission to be awarded the highest level of XP. To this end, do everything you can to survive and get a complete extraction with your team. During gameplay, increase the amount of XP earned by abusing enemy weak points to get kills and complete objectives. Additionally, you can earn badges. These are special rewards that grant XP based on your performance with different weapons and overall gameplay.
