If you’re having trouble settling on your new character, you might benefit from a quick look at the following archetype builds.
Each of these characters was designed to support a specific playstyle, but they represent only the smallest fraction of class/race/role combinations.
Note that archetype titles like “Zealot,” “Beastmaster,” and “Dragonscale” are meant to hint at each build’s basic theme. They don’t appear in the game, and they in no way limit the options available to you.
Archetypes are not offered as “best” builds. They’re simply meant to give you a glimpse of the abilities and playstyles that you’re bound to discover during your time in Tamriel.
While a certain set of abilities with certain gear should—in theory—yield certain results, the truth of the matter is that the way a character’s played is far more important than the way a character is built.
Whether or not you model your character after an archetype, make sure you experiment with new abilities, equipment, and playstyles. If your character isn’t living up to your expectations, use a Rededication Shrine to reclaim Skill Points or invest in different Attributes.
Understanding Character Archetypes
The provided archetypes are divided into four categories:
- Magicka DPS: Character builds that focus on dealing damage with spells
- Stamina DPS: Character builds that focus on dealing damage with melee weapons and bows
- Tanks: Character builds that prioritize survivability
- Healers: Character builds that focus on sustaining allies
While these categories indicate an archetype’s role, they don’t define it. Some DPS characters are designed to deal heavy, sustainable damage against formidable dungeon bosses; others are built for quick bursts of damage. Some Tanks are intended to lead their teammates in battle, while others are simply meant to survive alone in the wilds. Luckily, any character can be made to fill any role—all you need to do is find the right combination of abilities and equipment.
Nothing about an archetype is set in stone. From race and weapon selection to Attributes and Mundus Stone boons, every aspect of an archetype can be changed to suit your tastes.
