The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind eGuide Adventuring Across Tamriel

Currency and Holiday Events

About Currency

Five currencies are used in Elder Scrolls Online: gold, crowns, Alliance Points, Tel Var Stones, and Writ Vouchers. While gold is the primary money exchanged in PvE, the remaining four currencies give access to exclusive items and gear.

Elder Scrolls Online Currencies

Currency Where Available Earn Spend
Gold Throughout Tamriel Complete quests, defeat enemies, steal treasure, and sell items. Buy and sell items at Merchants across Tamriel.
Crowns Online Stores and Retailers Purchase separate from game. Spend crowns at the Crown Store or in the Housing Editor’s Purchase tab for exclusive content. Certain homes can be purchased with Crowns, bypassing the achievement requirement for a gold purchase.
Alliance Points Cyrodiil Participate in the Alliance War. Spend points at Merchants in the Alliance War on siege equipment and exclusive PvP gear.
Tel Var Stones The Imperial City Complete quests and defeat monsters/Daedra, bosses, and players in the Imperial City. Spend stones at Merchants on exclusive Imperial City gear.
Writ Vouchers Major Cities Complete Master Crafting Writs. Spend at Mastercraft Mediator.

Gold

Gold is collected in a number of ways, such as completing quests, looting mobs, selling items, and thievery. Most vendors of Tamriel accept gold for your adventuring needs.

Crowns

Crowns are used at the Crown Store for DLC, exclusive items, and in-game upgrades. Buying the game earns 500 crowns, while an ESO Plus subscription gives 1500 crowns per month. Otherwise, crowns must be purchased from the Elder Scrolls Online PC/MAC Store, the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, or Steam. Crowns are also available from retailers as a digital code.

Purchase Crown Crates from the Crown Store to receive a mystery collection of items. The selection of items from these crates changes quarterly. Due to the random nature of the Crown Crates, identical mounts, pets, costumes, and personalities are inevitable. Crown Gems are given in exchange for these duplicates. Certain items earned from Crown Crates can be converted to gems. These are used to purchase specific Crown Crate items at the Crown Store.

The Crown Store includes the following:

  • Crown Crates: Purchase a crate to receive a randomly selected item related to the current season.
  • DLC: New zones, quests, skills, rewards, and more are available with DLC. ESO Plus gives players access to all DLC as long as they are members.
  • Quest Starters: Occasionally, an item must be collected from the Crown Store to start a special quest, such as the housing introduction, Quest: A Friend in Need.
  • Upgrades: Play in the alliance of your choice with the Adventurer Pack, gain an additional character slot, purchase assistants, increase your inventory space, access the Vampire and Werewolf skill lines, and more in exchange for crowns.
  • Utility: Get a limited-time experience boost, reset Attributes or skills, or purchase supplies for your adventure.
  • Houses: Preview and purchase Staple, Classic, or Notable Homes around Tamriel.
  • Furniture: Use your crowns to furnish your homes with accessory, bedroom, kitchen, and living room sets.
  • Style Parlor: Visit the style parlor to add or change adornments, hairstyles, markings, and personalities.
  • Crafting: Crafting Motifs allow you to craft gear in new styles. Choose from an assortment of alliance and exotic styles. Buy Crown Mimic Stones, which can be used in place of any style items when crafting a weapon or apparel.
  • Wardrobe: Exclusive costumes, hats, and polymorphs are available from the Wardrobe section of the Crown Store.
  • Dyes: A rotating selection of dyes can be purchased from the Crown Store.
  • Mounts: Acquire a mount for quicker travel and increased storage space. A selection of exotic mounts and horses are available.
  • Non-Combat Pets: Non-combat pets provide companionship as you explore Tamriel. Choose from Daedric, domestic, and exotic pets.

Alliance Points

Alliance Points are earned by participating in the Alliance War and Battlegrounds. Kill other players and mobs, complete PvP quests, help capture keeps and resources, and defend keeps to earn the currency. Spend Alliance Points at Alliance War Merchants on siege equipment, PvP gear, and more.

These points also decide your Alliance War Rank. Starting out as a Citizen, make your way all the way to Grand Overlord.

Tel Var Stones

Earn Tel Var Stones in the Imperial City by completing quests, defeating Daedra and other players, and looting chests. Tel Var Stones dropped by an opponent are split evenly amongst anyone who contributes to the kill. The more stones you have, the more you earn with mob kills, thanks to an increasing multiplier shown in the lower-right corner.

Tel Var Stones Multiplier

Tel Var Stones Carried Multiplier
0 – 100 x1
101 – 1,000 x2
1,001 – 10,000 x3
10,001+ x4

Tel Var Stones are dropped upon death; killing another player gives you the opportunity to collect your opponent’s loot. You lose 50% of the Tel Var Stones you currently carry upon death. Note that unopened Tel Var Stone boxes, earned by completing quests, are not lost. Tel Var Stones can be deposited at the bank for safekeeping.

Spend Tel Var Stones at Merchants found in the Imperial City Sewers.

Writ Vouchers

Complete a max-tier writ and open the reward for a chance to receive a Master Crafting Writ. Complete the typically complex writ to receive Writ Vouchers. These in turn can be spent at the Mastercraft Mediator, Rolis Hlaalu, who becomes available once you have Writ Vouchers in Elden Root, Wayrest, or Mournhold. He sells specialty furnishings for your house, Ebony Style Motif Chapters, furnishing plans, and more.
