When targeting an NPC’s possessions, whether they’re furnishings inside a home or containers sitting around town, the words “Steal From” appear in red text. This indicates the items inside are owned by a civilian and swiping the loot adds Bounty if detected. Feel free to examine an NPC’s goods without worry, as a crime is not committed until the item is taken.
A red icon appears next to the item name, indicating it’s considered stolen once taken. The same icon is shown in your inventory next to the stolen items. Note that they do not stack with like items until a Fence has laundered them.
When hidden, there’s no harm in filling your inventory with stolen items. The only risk is the possibility of confiscation if stopped by a guard. If detected when taking the items, though, a Bounty is added with each offense.
If a guard is attacking you inside of a building, you must dodge their attacks without getting hit for a few seconds in order to exit through the door.
