The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind eGuide Adventuring Across Tamriel Crime and Punishment

Pickpocket

Some NPCs can be pickpocketed by crouching, approaching the person from behind, and interacting when within range. Hostile NPCs or NPCs who offer conversation or a quest cannot be pickpocketed. A message appears on-screen when crouching near an eligible NPC. Once you’re within range, if “Suspicious” or “Aware” appears, the crime cannot be committed. A percentage chance appears when a successful pickpocket is possible, indicating how likely you are to end up with an item. Try to find the sweet spot, where chances increase up to 20% if you are patient enough. If the victim becomes aware as the theft is attempted, Bounty is added and the NPC reacts to the situation. If the crime is a success, a treasure is added to your inventory.

The percentage chance of success is shown when attempting a pickpocket.

NPCs react differently to thieves. Some immediately attack, while others require a little prodding before doing so. If you are attacked first, killing the NPC does not count as murder.
