Prologue

Mission Briefing

You weren’t supposed to live. Handsome Jack had that train rigged with enough explosives to kill every would-be Vault Hunter this side of Eridium Blight, but not you. You survived, somehow—must have been the soft snowy landing. Not only are you not dead, but you’re not alone either. A CL4P-TP General Purpose Robot just so happened to be looting the corpses of less fortunate Vault Hunters as you came to. He goes by the name Claptrap, and he’s eager to enlist your help in getting him off this glacier. Try not to mind when he refers to you as his Minion.

To Claptrap’s Place We Go

Although you may doubt Claptrap’s helpfulness given your current predicament—as you should—the friendly ‘bot is quick to prove himself useful by handing over an ECHO device. This snazzy piece of high technology not only allows you to communicate with others over great distances, but it includes a class-twelve heads-up display that allows you to see your health, shields, and bullets while also providing a small map of your surroundings in the corner of the screen. Previous Vault Hunters would be so jealous if they knew you had this.

Debris piles such as this frozen mound of bones often contain ammo, money, Insta-Healths, and custom player and vehicle skins!

Claptrap is quick to usher you into his hideout, but you needn’t race over to him just yet. Take a look around the barren landscape and get a feel for the movement, camera, and jumping controls. Be sure to melee any debris piles you spot, as you just might find something useful. Once you’re done scouting the area, follow the sound of Claptrap’s grating voice south to the entrance of his little igloo thing.

Windshear Waste

Are you a Vault Hunter? Do you have nothing left to lose? Did Handsome Jack try to kill you? If you answered “yes” to any two of these three questions, then you’re probably living in Windshear Waste. Thanks to Pandora’s weird-ass solar cycle, Windshear Waste used to be a relatively lush environment, notable for its rolling oceans and complete lack of icicle-throwing ape beasts. Once winter rolled around, however, things got cold—fast. As in, very fast. As in, immediately. The “flash freeze,” as the Waste’s denizens would later call it, turned Windshear from a habitable beach to a stone-cold wasteland in the blink of an eye.

Eternally frozen and ringed by unscalable cliffs, the wreckage site where you’re left to die contains little more than a smattering of debris piles and an occasional ammo chest. The furry bullymongs don’t mind the cold, but they limit themselves to Frostbite Crevasse and tend to stay clear of Claptrap’s home on the ice… most of the time, that is. Though bleak, Windshear Waste is not entirely isolated. Those who make the journey south across the fractured glacier can escape to Southern Shelf to experience even more ice.
