She has told you that Herbert, a former crewman of hers who lives out in the Rustyards, is obsessed with lore surrounding the Lost Treasure of the Sands. If you find him, she says, he’ll be able to point you toward the last compass piece. Scarlett has asked you to deliver a special gift to Herbert.

Meeting the Old Coot

The final piece of the compass lies out in the Rustyards, and you’re going to need Herbert’s help to get it. He’s a scraggly old man who doesn’t like visitors (unless it happens to be Scarlett), so you have to appease him with a gift. Take the gift box Scarlett placed on the chair, and make your way to the Rustyard Corridor, on the northeast side of Wurmwater.

You’ll need the gift sitting on that chair if you’re to get Herbert to help you.

Use the rockets or harpoon on your sandskiff to take out the gun turrets mounted near the entrance to Rustyard Corridor, then head up the stairs on foot. Fight your way past the Badass Pirates and Grogmasters atop the walkway to the gated area in the northeast corner of the canyon. The entrance to the Rustyards zone is currently locked up, but you can open it by activating the gate. Pull the lever behind the fence on the right.

Grogmasters make for easy no-scope kills with a sniper rifle.

The hermit lives in a shack across the canyon from where you first enter the Rustyards. There’s a cable car that you can use to reach him, but the generator is out. You’ll have to take the long way around, through the Rusty Cog Settlement. Load up on ammo and health at the vending machines near the entrance, and equip your most potent fire grenade, a slag weapon, and another potent element, preferably fire or corrosion.

Make your way east through the camp to the Rusty Cog entrance.

The pirates in the Rustyards are a bit tougher than those you’ve encountered elsewhere, particularly the numerous Anchormen who roam the hill leading away from the entrance. Anchormen commonly attack in pairs, boast heavy metal armor, and use their anchors and chains to reel you in like a fish. Raiders are another threat you should watch out for. They charge straight toward you like Grogmasters, but they’re armed with a lead pipe in one hand and a knife in the other. Don’t let them get too close!

The Rusty Cog was an old cargo ship that now serves as a major base of operations for the Sand Pirates. The ship is effectively divided into three sections, each with different elevations. Stay low on this initial trip through the Rusty Cog, and be sure to loop around to the left to access the pirate chest beyond the room with the bunk beds. There are a lot of walkways, platforms, and general clutter in the Rusty Cog, so advance slowly and use a sniper rifle’s scope to scout ahead. Pick off any enemies you can before they go on alert.

Exit the Rusty Cog at its northern end, and approach the suspension bridge leading across the canyon. Descend the stairs to the right of the bridge to find a treasure chest beneath the upper platform, then return to the bridge. Turn the power on for the generator near the cable car to the right (for later), then climb aboard the anchor elevator to the left. Make your way over to Herbert’s shack across the boardwalk.

Herbert the Hermit lives in this shack. Yes, he plays the banjo.

The Rustyards

Not all of the ships that plied these forgotten waters were buried in sand at the bottoms of the canyons. Some, such as the Rusty Cog and Maroonie’s Clipper, were deposited high atop the exposed bluffs and left to teeter precariously on the edge of mountains. The Rustyards is home to several of these forgotten ships, as well as one of the region’s crazier inhabitants. He goes by the name of Herbert the Hermit and is so peculiar that even the Sand Pirates leave him alone. Visitors to his home will want to power on the nearby generator to get a ride across the gaping chasm aboard the cable car old Herbie had installed (presumably for his nighttime visits to spy on Captain Scarlett).

Cult of the Vault

The first Cult of the Vault symbol isn’t far from the Fast Travel station. Proceed past the ship near the rocks on the left, and look on the back side of the metal fence to spot it.

This symbol is high on the northern wall of Maroonie’s Clipper. Climb the ladder to the west, then leap first onto the metal awning and then to the roof of the small shacks. Run back along the rooftops to access the Cult of the Vault symbol.

My Main Squeeze

The first doll to squeeze is on the couch inside Herbert’s shack.

This next Scarlett doll is also inside Herbert’s shack, on the shrine he made for her. Right next to the, err, human skull and panties. *shudder*

Cross the bridge to the boat marooned atop Tittleman’s Point, and locate the Scarlett doll at the bow.

This Scarlett doll is in the northeast corner of Maroonie’s Clipper, in the same room that has the “Message in a Bottle” quest and the part for Scooter’s quest.

Unlike the other dolls, this one is in the Rusty Cog Settlement. Head north through the ship along the upper walkways until you reach the third section. The doll is on the east side of the ship, in a small room with crates.

Crow’s Nest

Leap onto the large superstructure near the stern and climb onto the section leading around to the right-hand side (as viewed while crossing the ship’s deck). Make your way around to the rear, then leap up the ladder-like beams that wrap around the center of the mast. It may seem as though there’s nowhere to get a foothold, but the Vault Hunter can leap all the way up toward the large horizontal structure high above. Still, you’ll need to climb it from the rear of the ship.
