Rakk

Rakk are natural fliers, a desert world version of bats meets birds. They’re not confrontational generally unless provoked, Rakk are just as willing to divebomb bandits who accidentally zing them as they are to divebomb you.

Once provoked, rakk circle until they find an angle they like, then fly into a straight path at the target to divebomb. Their final approach is obvious for its directness; if they’re flying straight at you in a particular posture for more than a second, it’s not a swoop that just happens to be in your direction.

As they dip and swirl in midair, rakk are difficult to strike, but they make themselves obvious targets as they arrow in to attack. Straight-on sighted fire at them with any weapon as they swoop in will work; hip fired shotguns and very late hip fired sniper rifles will do wonders against rakk, too. Using late shots from these weapons to snipe rakk at the last moment has the advantage of dropping the loot right on top of you. For style points, kill rakk with Tediore reloads… this also unlocks an Achievement. (Using Maya’s Phaselock to freeze a flying enemy in place to produce an easy target is also a great tactic.) Rakk are almost never alone, and instigating a fight with one will usually commit you to a fight with a half dozen or more.

As a thin-skinned cross between a bat and a bird, rakk are particularly vulnerable to fire.

Rakk

TVHM name: Sky Hunter

The most common and least threatening rakk race is spied only a matter of zones into the game, over Liar’s Burg. They may even get involved in the early festivities between Flynt’s marauders and local bullymongs. You’ll continue to see regular rakk throughout your adventure. Remember that, since rakk are melee creatures, if you’re wearing an elemental spike shield, rakk will take damage just for divebombing you. If it’s a fire spike shield, you might kill rakk that attack you without even realizing it!

Pow, Bam, Zap, and Rakkman’s Minion

Rakkman’s minions are weak individually, but strong collectively. Don’t let them gang up on you unknowingly. Against flying enemies, like rakk and Hyperion surveyors, it’s often possible to use the environment to discourage them from attacking at all. Flyers can’t attack straight down, so if you’re oriented near any precipitous cliffs or buildings that block a view or access from the sky, rakk naturally can’t approach from that direction.

Volcanic Rakk

These Volcanic Rakk are lucky just to stay alive in their searing environment, let alone stand up as a fighting force. Volcanic Rakk have health that is well below average. The better to give an opportunistic, downed Vault Hunter a sterling chance at Second Wind, when near Volcanic Rakk.

Badass Rakk

TVHM name: Super Badass Rakk

These big daddies among standard rakk hit much harder, and pack way more health. Try to pump all the close range damage you can into Badass Rakk as they divebomb, like by hitting them dead-on with a Torgue shotgun blast or something.

Chubby Rakk

It’s a very rare rakk indeed that can find and devour enough food to get here in the first place. Chubby rakk are sluggish in their airborne trajectories, but watch out if they do get within striking range—they’ll deal heavy damage.

Son of Mothrakk

During the course of completing story missions, you’ll fight through an area called the Wildlife Exploitation Preserve. At the end of this area, the boss you encounter is unthinkable (but not the Son of Mothrakk). Return to the last area of the preserve any time after the tragic encounter, and Son of Mothrakk will be waiting then.
