AS THE PSYCHO
There’s a part of Krieg that remembers when he was sane. This part can’t ever seem to take over Krieg’s tongue, so even his most heartfelt sentiments tend to come out as deranged screams about “NIPPLE SALADS!” But the inner voice of reason can control the outer voice of madness with one simple promise, whispered between blood-soaked killing sprees: “You can kill as many of the deserving as you like, but if you ever kill an innocent person, I will destroy us.” As addled as he is, Krieg knows it’s not an empty threat. And so he obeys, keeping his axe out of the wrong backs and his fingers out of the wrong eye sockets… for now.
Action Skill: BUZZ AXE RAMPAGE
When you activate Krieg’s Buzz Axe Rampage, he draws his axe, gets a massive boost to his Speed and Melee Damage stats, and can take no actions outside of running, swinging his axe (with the right trigger), and throwing his axe (by holding the left trigger and pressing the right trigger). Most regular foes will die in a single chop, and even bosses will go down quickly if you circle around them while swinging repeatedly. The shaky camera work and high speed can make it difficult to find your targets, so keep an eye on the auto-map until you get used to it.
Each successful kill completely refills Krieg’s Health, and he’ll need it—since enemies typically attack the nearest target, Krieg can expect to meet a volley of gunfire as he rushes from meat bicycle to meat bicycle. Always plan ahead, and don’t wait to use the Buzz Axe Rampage until Krieg is at the brink of death. Officially, Buzz Axe Rampage has a two-minute cooldown, but when Krieg takes damage, the cooldown period is reduced. So in practice, the more you need it, the faster you’ll regain access to it.
The Bloodlust tree offers skills that can extend the duration of your rampage and reduce the odds of Krieg getting killed during it, but it’s the Mania tree that really makes Blood Axe Rampage shine. Early in the game, Fuel the Rampage provides significantly more cooldown reduction as Krieg takes damage, allowing you to rapidly chain one rampage into another. But it’s the tier 6 Release the Beast skill that truly unlocks its power, providing full health recovery as soon as the rampage is activated, and reducing the cooldown time to 0 if it is triggered while less than 1/3 of your Max Health remains. POUNDS! OF! FLESH! Indeed!
Bloodlust
If you want access to Krieg’s powerful Blood Axe Rampage Action Skill but don’t want to sacrifice your civility to do it, this is the tree for you. It allows players to play Krieg in the same fundamental way as the other Vault Hunters—using a variety of guns from a reasonable distance, enjoying the security of a fully charged shield, and not constantly being on fire. Since it keeps Krieg’s suicidal impulses in check, this is generally the best skill tree for solo players, and it is far and away the best for all Krieg players below level 20 or so. Despite that, it also has strong long-term potential and combines well with the Mania tree to create high-level builds focused on either melee damage or grenade/explosive damage.
Many of this tree’s arts revolve around gaining stacks of Bloodlust. Note that you acquire Bloodlust stacks by dealing damage, not earning kills, so fast-firing weapons like submachine guns can get you to the Max 100 Bloodlust stacks within the first 20 to 30 seconds of combat.

The shield penalties make this skill tree a little rough early on, but it’s a powerhouse in the late game, especially once you learn its insanely powerful tier 6 topper.

Hellborn
Unlike other characters’ elemental trees, Krieg’s Hellborn tree isn’t so much about lighting others on fire as it is about lighting himself on fire. The skills in this tree provide all sorts of bonuses while you’re wrapped in flames, as well as several exciting new ways to set yourself ablaze. Yes, being on fire still damages Krieg, which is one of the reasons that this skill tree is very hard to pursue effectively early in the game. Another is that few of the early skills do much of anything by themselves; they’re all pieces of a larger puzzle that doesn’t really come together until you have access to tier 4 and 5 skills. There’s a lot of power here, but it’s easier to level up in another skill tree and then use a respec once you have 20+ levels under your belt.
There’s no point pursuing the whole self-immolation thing in a half-hearted fashion; if you go Hellborn, go all the way, maxing out both of the tier 1 skills and choosing Relics, class mods, weapons, and even shields that are focused on inflicting burns or enhancing burn damage.

Solo Play
In the early game, Krieg is one of the more difficult characters to play solo. His self-destructive nature works much better in multiplayer, where teammates can cover you during a kamikaze charge and/or resurrect you afterwards. Less experienced players should definitely focus on Bloodlust, his safest skill tree.
Once you’ve racked up a pile of skill points, you can respec into powerful builds in any of the Psycho trees. A Mania build focused on the exploitation of Release the Beast is a straight-up powerhouse in many situations, and high-level Bloodlust Psychos tend to be solid, well-rounded characters. Hellborn, on the other hand, is a hard skill tree to pull off solo, since you’re so dependent on having a stock of powerful elemental weapons and shields. But if you’re lucky enough to find the right loot or can borrow some from another character, going Hellborn can be a blast.
Co-Operative Play
Krieg is an excellent character for co-op play, whether you’re casually messing around with friends or gunning down raid bosses in Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode. Since you don’t need to worry so much about being well-rounded, you can make narrowly focused builds that deal ludicrous amounts of melee damage, exploit burn effects to the limit, or are capable of engineering lethal Bloodsplosion chain reactions.
In multiplayer, Redeem the Soul becomes a very valuable skill, allowing you to instantly resurrect fallen foes. (Just make sure you’re in a situation where you’ll be able to snag a Second Wind during the extended Fight For Your Life sequence.) Redeem the Soul also combos beautifully with Maya’s Res skill, which allows her to revive Krieg immediately after Krieg revives her. In fact, a healing-focused Siren and a Hellborn or Mania-tree Krieg may make the most effective two-character team in the game.
