Threshers

Threshers are violent worm-like cylindrical monsters that move by burrowing. While burrowing, they ingest the matter they pass through. They must always be eating, so they’re always burrowing and moving, and they can grow to enormous size—it’s actually not known whether there’s a limit for how big a thresher can get, really.

All thresher varieties move primarily by burrowing, although some of the smaller ones can also, from burrows in the ground, launch themselves through the air in great arcs before landing and burrowing right back down again. Their methods of attack are varied, depending on the species. Apart from the ones small enough to leap in the air, threshers are too large, multifaceted, and cumbersome for Maya to suspend them with Phaselock; instead, they just take sudden damage.

Tadpole Thresher

TVHM name: Leech Thresher

These are the seeds that will one day become Mossmud and Pyre Threshers, and the like. Well, that is unless you exterminate them first. Tadpole Threshers move by both burrowing and leaping, though the leaping is unwise of them—it makes them pretty easy targets for you while they’re out of the ground and soaring. When a Tadpole Thresher wants to attack, it either throws spikes from its tentacles at long range, or swipes with its tentacles up close.

Slagged Thresher

Since threshers are underground dwellers, they’ve had extra chances at Eridium exposure, versus land dwellers that had to wait for the Vault to be opened. Slagged Threshers behave like Tadpole Threshers, but they’re tougher to kill and they can inflict Slag status on you with their attacks. They’re also resistant to Slag damage sources themselves.

Feeler Thresher

TVHM name: Groper Thresher

The Feeler Thresher is larger and more mature than Tadpole Threshers, so they’ve left leaping aboveground behind them. They still throw spikes from tentacles, and swipe with them, too… but with a twist—when you’re far away, the Feeler Thresher may burrow its tentacles into the ground from wherever it is, then resurface them right by you to attack! You can fight and damage these tentacles, possibly destroying them; they’ll also disappear if the Feeler Thresher chooses to retract them.

Wormhole Thresher

TVHM name: Blackhole Thresher

The Wormhole Thresher has the ability, unique among life forms on Pandora, to suck in desired targets as though the attacker itself became a Singularity grenade. It becomes even more dangerous because the Wormhole Thresher can puff up spines all around its body as it does this! The suction pulls its targets right onto the spines, and into point-blank range.

Breaking the suction attack is accomplished by dealing damage to the Wormhole Thresher. Hurt it enough, and it will break off the attack. The spine suction action is its bread and butter, but it can also use other mainstays like tossing tentacles spikes and swiping with tentacles.

Turf Thresher

TVHM name: Mossmud Thresher

Turf Threshers are more like minibosses than normal enemies. They do everything the other threshers do (except leaping, which is only for the young’ns, and sucking in, which is only from Wormhole Threshers). However, they also use their tentacles to smack the ground around the main stalk viciously, creating area-of-effect damage. And while the Feeler Thresher can send out two tentacles through the ground independent of the main stalk to harass you, Turf Threshers can send four. Note that taking down all the tentacles independently and then the Turf Thresher will amount to a ton of XP!

Gluttonous Thresher

Ah, the best laid plans of rats and psychos… or however that goes. An overindulgent thresher will interrupt a very important mission in a very gustatory way. For reasons that become apparent when you get there, the Gluttonous Thresher actually has a shield, so you might come toting a Shock weapon at first. This extra-fully-grown thresher can spawn up to six satellite tentacles to complement the main stalk.

Old Slappy

Why, it’s the vile thresher that robbed Hammerlock of a limb! That’s not taken lightly whatsoever. During the mission “Slap-Happy,” you must lure this old fiend out with some interesting bait. Apart from its heritage, Old Slappy is a very similar specimen to the Gluttonous Thresher, and also engages up to six tentacles at a time in the fight.

Badass Pyre Thresher

TVHM name: Super Badass Pyre Thresher

One of the baddest baddies in a game chock-full of them, the Badass Pyre Thresher announces its presence on the battlefield ferociously, arriving with a flaming nova blast. It does that every time it emerges from the ground—if there’s ever a time in the game where a Fire-resistant or immune shield is actually useful, here it is. In addition to gouting nova blasts near the main stalk when it erupts from the earth, this thresher behaves like a manic Turf Thresher, tossing needles and sending out up to four tentacle emissaries at a time. The problem is that now all of that stuff is on fire. You’re allergic to that.

Unknown

It’s well known that threshers can grow to tremendous size. That, in fact, if unchecked in development, given enough resources and lack of sufficient predation, a thresher might actually grow to incomprehensible size. Perhaps with no upper bound on size limit! Well, how big CAN a thresher grow? You might find out… but not until after completing True Vault Hunter Mode. And not without friends. Talk to Tannis, she’ll get you started. Oh… and be sure to bring the Eridium.
