The state of an enemy is extremely important to gauge; it’s the precursor to your entire tactical planning as the infiltration continues deeper into a restricted area.
Unaware enemies have no indicated state and are either stationary or patrolling an area. Even when you’re being detected, don’t expect a change in the enemy state until the detector arrow turns red. Then look for the following:
- Orange “?”—Investigating: As soon as you trigger a “conflict,” seek hiding. The Heat level drops from red to yellow, and you’re “escaping” (as shown on your minimap). The enemies reduce their conflict state to that of actively searching for you. Remain in cover or flee until your Heat meter turns white and you escape, and/or neutralize investigating guards before their detection arrow turns red. Ghost-stealth tactics are permissible.
- Orange “!”—Alerted: The enemy has detected you, and is coming to arrest or subdue you. Not complying will send them into combat against you.
- Red “!”—In Conflict: A foe has seen you, his or her detection arrow has turned red, and they are actively attempting to neutralize you. Basically, you’re in combat with them. Shot-callers phone for reinforcements at this time. Ghost-related stealth infiltrations have failed. Either flee or retaliate with violence to a degree you’re comfortable with.
