Watch Dogs 2 eGuide Training Part 2: Hacking

Hacking: Objects

You can manipulate various inanimate objects or scenery, depending on how you wish to use it. While you’re holding down your Hack button to target an object, a hacking module appears, giving you a choice of up to four options: trigger, proximity trigger, shut down, and attract.

Trigger: This starts the object’s function, which for you is usually the detonation of the object. Though this can severely wound an enemy nearby (and you), it’s much better to lay a trap with the other hack options first.

Proximity Trigger (Trap): This creates a small, dome-shaped field around the object. Any foe (not friend, drone, or Marcus) that steps into the field automatically triggers the trap. This is a fantastic and often-used technique to remove foes you can’t easily attack at melee range. It also helps “herd” enemies to the source of the trap, while you explore elsewhere. Note you don’t need to trigger the trap, just the proximity dome.

Shut Down: This switches off the device temporarily. While this isn’t helpful for objects you actively want to detonate, it’s very useful when interacting with objects that need to be switched off, such as motion detectors or laser fencing. It also stops the enemy from using the object too, so use it on gates to halt foes from sending in reinforcements. Note the “countdown” of the Shut Down icon; this isn’t a permanent option. It can also be used to stop the more “enthusiastic” of co-op players from causing havoc when you’re trying stealth infiltrations, too!

Attract: This attracts any nearby foe to the object. It can be done multiple times (if a foe is too far away). Use this to move a foe away from a route you want to take, so you can sneak past without tussling with the enemy. Better yet, prepare the proximity trigger first, then attract the foe so he walks right into your trap!

It is important to note that not every object has the same hacking outcomes. For example, you can only shut down a traffic light or change the light colors. Therefore, it’s worth checking each hackable object for its functionality. The previous list applies mainly to junction boxes, vault transformers, HVAC units, explosive pallets, and gas pipes. The complete list of hackable objects in this chapter lists all hackable objects.
