Activity: Motocross Races

Once you’ve finished your first Main Operation, you’re able to begin a series of Motocross Races, signified by the previously shown icon, to engage in off-road motocross trials in and around San Francisco. You don’t need to purchase or find a motocross bike first; one is always provided to you (which you cannot change) for the duration of the race.

When you’re about to start a motocross race, your smartphone shows some helpful information: the times needed for gold, silver, or bronze medals; the length of the course; the difficulty; and the rewards (Followers and money). There are five courses to try, and a sixth (which runs the entire perimeter of the Bay Area) once you gain gold in the first five courses.

Beat the time-trial waypoint markers within an allotted time; move through lit arched waypoints to win gold, silver, or bronze. Let’s not embarrass yourself with some terrible times, okay?

As with other race types, practice makes perfect. They are a good way to also accrue Followers and money. As ever, go for gold for more Followers, and choose Hard courses for more money.

DON’T GET CROSS—GET MOTOCROSS

All but one of the races involve the use of a motocross bike (the Kodachi Motorsport), but one race uses the Batta Kurujawa Motorsport quadbike. Both steer in different ways, so practice to learn their foibles and strengths. You might want to try all six courses as early as possible, as they show you most of the shortcuts across the Bay Area, which you can use during operations. Also, read the Motocross Race section later in this guide for specific tactics on claiming gold for every course!

Look Ahead and Look Out: It’s vitally important to maintain a competent racing line throughout each course. This means cutting in right at the edge of each archway waypoint. To check the racing line, it’s usually best to follow roads and trails, but also look ahead to the subsequent waypoint and gauge the shortest distance between it and your current waypoint. This can shave seconds off your time and ensure your gold medal time cannot be beaten!

Exceptions to the Rule: Naturally, there are exceptions. If you’re racing through thick undergrowth or wooded areas, you may wish to slow and move around the outside or take a less direct path to ensure you don’t hit an immovable object like a tree (which adds far more to your time than careful driving). However, once you learn the course, try to maintain higher speeds and more direct paths through even the most difficult of terrain!

Wicked Air: There are numerous ramps and long jumps, and boosting over them (with the ./Research Engine Override ability) is key to sailing over obstacles. On landing, have your back tire land just before your front one (by moving your bike into this position while you’re airborne). Stick the landing, as you can only afford to fall off once or twice a race if you want the gold.

Two Hacks to Try: If you’re on straight areas or freeways and any time you need an extra boost (e.g., after slowing down or crashing), use the Engine Override ability. Increase your BotNet to 20 through the ./Research app so you can keep up the speed boosts for as long as possible. Also use the Vehicle Directional Hack to move any vehicles you see coming up, but don’t inadvertently cause a pileup that you can’t avoid! Only then will you truly master this race mode.
