Books

Books can be obtained by purchasing them from merchants or by loot them from containers. Sometimes receiving a book signifies that you've progresssed the plot to a certain point. Note that all books have a weight 0.5 Kg, which may quickly over encumber you during early stages of the game. Information you read in many books is added to your in-game journal. You can then sell that book back to a merchant while keeping all of the knowledge you gained by reading it.

MONSTER TOMES

When read, these books add an entry to the Bestiary. The new entry provides information regarding specific lore, strengths and weakenesses including ways the Witcher can prepare to counter these abilities. You will only receive a monster entry the first time you read any particular title. Rereading the book, or any of it's copies, will provide no new information.

FUNCTIONAL BOOKS

These books describe locations, lore and mysteries to be discovered across the many regions Geralt will explore. When read, they add locations to your World Map and may trigger a Journal Entry related to the given objective.

COMMON BOOKS

There are a vast number of common books in the world. They provide stories, lore, advice on swordfighting, weapon repair and many other subjects that add depth and variety to your exploration. While some books may indicate specific points of interest that may be of interest to the player, these books do not provide a bonus; they are simply there to be enjoyed.

NOTES AND JOURNALS

In addition to the books, there are a wide variety of notes and journals that explain shorter, more intimate messages, ranging from the important to the trivial. Most will be found or received while exploring the various points of interest associated with the living world. While notes may not be tracked by the Journal, they are all worth a read when time permits.
