Brief
The cartel deserter is believed to be hiding somewhere in Laguna Colorada. We need to locate and extract him to find out what he can tell us about the sicario training program.
If at First You Don’t Succeed…
You’re to locate a cartel search party, grab the leader before he flees in a vehicle, and interrogate him regarding the deserter you desperately need. If he flees, you’d better chase him down quickly, as he’s likely to drive to the second location (where the deserter is), usually resulting in the death of the deserter and mission failure.
Laguna Colorada Baths: Recon
TACMAP
This forgotten tourist attraction has a cartel outpost at the gas station. Avoid it, as you’re here to check the edge of the lake where the mission area is, south of the small cottage structure. Watch for a trio of patrolling foes along the way. Then check the six enemies at the deserter’s car; you need to take the leader alive.
Cartel Search Party
Around six enemies are inspecting the spot where a car skidded to a halt. It’s tactically advantageous to remove the trio of cartel enemies patrolling the area to the north first, in quick succession, so the remaining foes are none the wiser. Then quickly tag the enemies so you have just enough time to grab the leader before he reaches his vehicle and escapes.
Laguna Colorada Baths: Other Tactical Advice

After removing the trio of foes, creep into the mission area, moving from the cottages to the parked cars and continuing south to the search party. Target all six foes between you and your team, and shoot them all in a single volley. Freaked out, the leader tries to reach the nearby SUV. Either take out the tires and finish off the vehicle so it slows to a crawl as soon as possible, or creep to the SUV before you open fire, and plant C4 (two charges, just to make sure). When the leader starts to run, explode the SUV before he reaches it. Then collar him as he runs for the next nearest car to the north (where one of you should be).
You can lob in a grenade on the left side of the group (if you’re facing south) so the detonation doesn’t kill the leader.
You can also creep to the two nearest cars and drive off in them, parking them near the cottage before returning to gun down (or snipe from a distance) the search party. The leader has no vehicle to run to, so he’s easily wrangled.
If the enemy leaves in a vehicle, the usual takedown rules apply for stopping his SUV. However, if he reaches the location of the second search party, the mission fails. As he takes the road, cut him off by driving up the side of the lake so you’re farther along the road. In Co-op, have two Ghosts ready with a road block away from cartel outposts, along the west-side lake road in case the assault duo messes up and lets the leader drive off.
Try Again with Greater Speed
When you locate the second cartel search party, the situation looks dire for the deserter; he’s on the verge of getting a bullet from either of the two snipers, or from the ground troops here. Grab him quickly, bundle him into a vehicle, and head for the hills, specifically the hill to the north where Montuyoc Alpha is located.
Rock Outcrop: Recon
TACMAP
This is a small ravine with a dirt road bisecting the outcrops from north to south, and a secondary road near the tarmac thoroughfare to the east. The search party is much bigger this time, numbering 14, and they have two troublesome snipers, as well as the deserter mere feet away. Time and quick thinking are imperative here.
Note that the deserter may turn his gun on you, and can also battle to a waiting vehicle (one of the search party’s SUVs or cars) and zoom off, the latter of which results in you giving chase. In this case, use the same techniques you would to apprehend any enemy you need taken alive under these conditions.
Don’t forget that the enemies usually remain stationary until you make a move, which allows you to send up a drone to tag everyone, if you wish.
North Road
Head down here at a reasonable speed and stop at the deserter’s location, using the vehicle as cover, and either bundle him into the vehicle or drag him north to the cartel car parked nearby.
Another option is to sneak down this road and the rock outcrops to the west, taking care not to be seen by the sniper. However, this isn’t the best plan, because the deserter heads straight in to fight the cartel, and you’re usually too far to help him, plus you don’t have a direct shot at foes who may kill him.
Northeast Road
This allows you to creep up onto the rock ledge with the north sniper and take him down via melee strangulation or silenced shots, then shoot the south sniper. Unfortunately, you’re still quite far from the deserter and can’t see him.
East Lakeside
Before wading into the large cluster of search party foes, cross the tarmac road to get a good shot at both snipers (north and south of you). Then start on the foes heading north toward the deserter, while lobbing in grenades to distract the main enemies or sending your team in to attack.
South Road
Due to the previous mission objectives occurring to the north, you don’t usually head this way. But you can creep up on the sniper and remove this most-pressing threat, tag the two enemies closest to the deserter, and drive up the road on the west side of the mission area. With silencers, this is sometimes possible without the rest of the search party knowing.
Rock Outcrop: Other Tactical Advice
Approach in a vehicle from A so you can drive past the foe (or foes) near the parked car, swerve in front of the deserter to protect him from the sniper just north of D, and bundle him into the passenger seat, backseat, or trunk. Then take off before the search party realizes what’s going on.
The other option is to remove the nearest threats to the deserter using silencers and stealth takedowns. A silenced sniper rifle is key here. Head in from A or B, onto the rock outcrop where the sniper is. Strangle him from behind or shoot him. Then shoot the sniper to the south and the two foes on the ground just south of the target. Order your team into the cluster of foes near the enemy vehicles, then head into the ravine and clear stragglers. Bundle the deserter into the cartel car parked just north of E.
A great plan is to approach up from the lake (C) and shoot the north and south snipers immediately. Then engage the cluster of foes and those to the southwest who can most easily defeat the deserter. The deserter usually starts firing at them too, so help him out! Then grab an enemy vehicle and stow the deserter in there.
Solo plans are all good and well, but for added pizazz, approach from A, B, C, and D and off the search party in a single and devastating volley of shots, with each Ghost responsible for a set number of foes in a certain location. Safety of the target is then assured.
Extraction to Montuyoc Alpha
Head north, hopefully in a tough vehicle with good off-road capabilities, as you can drive off the beaten path and straight up the hill to the extraction Rally Point. Inside, Emilio the deserter gives you a name: Bookhart. The mission concludes.
