Brief
We have actionable intel on Carl Bookhart, the former US Army Ranger who is now training sicarios for Santa Blanca. Bookhart can be found at the cartel base inside the abandoned Choza Padre silver mine. Find Bookhart and kill him.
The Hart of Darkness
On the western edge of the province, two clicks southwest of Montuyoc Alpha, is a remote silver mine where a traitor lurks. He’s deep underground, and the only way to defeat him is to meet him in his bunker. Of course, you can send a robotic drone laced with explosives to say hello first, if you wish.

TACMAP
As your in-game Tacmap doesn’t include the layout of the mine, this can be quite tricky to navigate…until you study our guide’s map, that is! The mine exterior comprises a couple of buildings, some parked vehicles, and three foes who are easy to overcome. Inside the mine structure, you move west to east and slightly downhill, toward the main mine shaft, the wheel of which you can see on the surface but not access. You can sweep the area, engaging as many or as few foes as you like.
Descend the shaft (E) to the lower level, a section of tunnel that opens up into Bookhart’s minigun-guarded lair—a double room with a minigun nest, followed by a pair of doors on either side and two more miniguns aimed through the doorways. There’s only one way to deal with Bookhart—a mine exploration. Unless you’re carrying an explosive drone.
Exterior: Mine Combat Zone
Enter this area so the objective updates. This is a lightly guarded open area you can approach from any direction, even the road. Just ensure you see, and drop, all three foes so you can enter the mine without other enemies knowing you’re here. Long-range takedowns are great, but stealth-grabbing or anything in between works.
Note you don’t have to be here if you’ve discovered the secret exit (B) and remove Bookhart from that location.
Northeast: Secret Entrance
You don’t actually need to enter the mine at all! If you follow the mountain trail (which is visible all the way from Montuyoc Alpha) and search the area northeast of the mine shaft wheel, you find this old tunnel. You can get halfway down the tunnel (heading west) before you reach a dead end, though the tunnel continues above you. Switch to a drone (explosive, naturally), flick on night vision, and steer it west, around the corner to the south, and into F. Detonate after another swift left turn, straight into the face of Carl Bookhart! Problem solved!
If you finish Bookhart from the mine, you can use this tunnel to escape down. Drop down and head east, out of here, but note that you can’t maneuver inward (except by drone).
Northwest: Mine Entrance
Switch to night vision as you enter the mine to pinpoint enemies, but be aware that some side chambers are brightly lit. Ahead is a minigun turret on the right side as the main tunnel splits. Avoid it by heading down the side tunnel on your left (east) and appearing at D after navigating some side chambers. Or lob in flashbangs, snipe from range before the minigun enemy sees you, or destroy nearby foes by shooting explosive barrels. There are no more miniguns on this floor once you pass the first one.
Underground: Central Tunnel
As you can see on the map, this is the main artery to the mine shaft (E). Take whatever route you like. Double back or head down side tunnels to flush out enemies. It’s wise to reach E, remove the first armored-foe threat, then backtrack and finish off all remaining foes on this level so they don’t follow you down to F.
Underground: Mine Shaft
Watch for an armored foe here—shoot the explosive barrel nearby, or use a preferred takedown method. Head down the mine shaft, and when you reach the bottom (the tunnel heading north to F), send a drone to investigate the area ahead so you can pinpoint the foes and three minigun emplacements.
Underground: Bookhart’s Bunker
As the tunnel widens, a minigun nest and doorways on either side lead to a rear room where Bookhart lurks with two additional foes manning a minigun in each far corner. The firepower here can be problematic, so in addition to slow advancing, distant sniping, hiding in the side tunnel as you head from E to F, try flashbangs to bewilder the enemy. Remember that Bookhart has few options (only the escape tunnel to B), so if you’re slow and patient, you can wear him down and complete the mission.
Choza Padre Mine: Other Tactical Advice
The mission is simple if you have an explosive drone. Launch it after running west from B to the dead end, steer the drone up and around into F, and detonate.
Otherwise, enter the mine and make a methodical and slow clear-out of all foes, checking every single tunnel and side chamber. Once all enemies are neutralized on the main level, head down to face the traitor. Send your team through one doorway while you head through the other to minimize chances of the enemy hitting everyone. Or be patient and snipe from a distance, stepping in and out of the doorway to cover.
Can you drive down here on a bike or in an SUV? Yes, though the concrete barriers and explosive barrels make this highly dangerous.
Solo tactics are the key here, though you can spend more time catching enemies in crossfire situations by heading through opposing tunnels into side chambers. You can also storm F through both doorways at the same time, which forces the enemy to choose from more targets.
