The most basic and important defensive maneuver accomplished by holding down the Shield button. Incoming attacks are blocked, except grabs and (extremely rare) unblockable or shield-shattering moves. Releasing the Shield button just before an attack impacts results in a perfect shield, basically a universal parry allowing the defender to counterattack much faster than normal after blocking.
