Super Smash Bros. Ultimate eGuide Mewtwo

Overview

Mewtwo is a quintessential glass cannon, with one of the best chargeable projectiles in the game with its neutral special, and incredible aerial mobility with up special and a wall jump. To top off its comprehensive kit, Mewtwo has powerful high-damage combos. It also has one of the best air dodges in the game, in which it’s intangible almost immediately as it Teleports around its enemy’s attacks. While its Teleports are punishable, they require the opponent to predict where Mewtwo will be in order topunish.

Mewtwo’s remarkable power is balanced by weaknesses in its defense and vulnerability. In addition to being a relatively large target, Mewtwo is a light and floaty fighter with a slow double jump and slow fall speed, so it’s highly susceptible to certain setups and mix-ups. As most fighters can use their double jump for a quick vertical boost to bait out anti-air attacks, Mewtwo’s double jump often puts it in a worse predicament as it’s slow and gives the opponent the advantage. However, there are subtle mechanical input tricks you can use to enhance your mobility. For instance, you can use specials to cancel your double jump early to drop to the ground quickly (e.g., backward jump into immediate low-altitude double jump, then immediately cancel into neutral special—this allows you to back up while still facing your foe and charging your Shadow Ball). Additionally, special-cancels at the peak of your apex allow you to use your momentum to slightly increase your jump height. This is useful for escaping your aggressor’s air-to-air juggleattempts.

Mewtwo’s wake-up and roll options are also lackluster, with its roll and get-up attacks being quite laggy, but thanks to its vast variety of aerial options, Mewtwo has a strong kit for recovering onto a ledge. It can mix up its recovery to keep the opponent guessing between its various techniques involving ledge jumps, ledge releases, double jumps, Teleporting air dodges, and its up specialTeleport.

Mewtwo is a skill-intensive fighter to play and master, particularly when it comes to execution and survivability.
