Super Smash Bros. Ultimate eGuide Lucas

Overview

Lucas, star of Mother 3, the legendary Japan-only EarthBound sequel, fights like Ness in certain ways but blazes his own trail in others. He also puts his brain waves to good use with PK powers, controlling fire and ice and thunder. Instead of Ness’s PK Flash, Lucas controls PK Freeze, which is similar but temporarily immobilizes victims. Lucas’s PK Fire travels horizontally in midair and flames out more quickly, making it more a direct shot and less a potential holding tool than Ness’s downward-angled, simmering version. Lucas’s PK Thunder is crucially different in that it doesn’t disappear when it hits foes. No, it cuts right through them, hitting rapidly with different segments of the tail.

On the ground, Lucas is more competent than Ness, with faster moves: his neutral attack, down tilt, and up tilt are some of the fastest attacks in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He does his best to imitate Ness’s projectile-returning bat swing, though using a stick means it’s not quite as devastating.

Despite similarities in their special moves, these differences give Lucas his own feel and style. Where he’s most similar to Ness is that they both have novel, challenging recovery, using PK Thunder to zap themselves back to safe ground. It takes practice to get consistent in hitting correctly to zap sideways at just the right angle, and it can be easy to mess up and go off-angle, perhaps catastrophically. It’s also possible for opponents to make the snaking thunderbolt fizzle out before you pilot it into Lucas, leaving him falling helplessly.

But Lucas has a leg up over Ness in the recovery department, since he can use his Rope Snake grab as a ledge tether!
