This civic-minded Shih Tzu assistant joins the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate action with a tool set similar to Villager’s, but distinct in important ways. Isabelle brings along a similar slingshot, giving unparalleled air control in a small line to either side. She can also catch items and shots with Pocket like Villager. These two abilities together let her harass enemy zoners, thwarting their ranged game plans while implementing Isabelle’s own.
Isabelle’s Fishing Rod and Lloid Trap are where she’s most distinguished. Fishing Rod works as a combo hit-throw and tethering move, good for pulling in enemies from surprisingly far away, and for snagging the edges of stages before falling. Combined with Lloid Traps, like vertical fireworks designed to go off when an enemy triggers them, Isabelle has the moves to institute her own zoning, ranged attack. With slingshot rounds, the ability to catch anything thrown at her, a friendly rocket trap that works like a land mine, and a unique Fishing Rod grapple, she can lay claim to her own patch of the stage and dare adversaries to push her off.
Some of Isabelle’s normal moves resemble Villager’s, but with her own twists. Her side tilt parasol is slightly better, with a bigger hitbox, while her up smash is a linear, limited traffic sign. She’s not beholden to the random number generator for her up/down air turnip strikes, which deal a static amount of damage and knockback. And, while her Balloon Trip recovery special might be the same in function, check out her unique balloon and swing contraption.
