Super Smash Bros. Ultimate eGuide Mega Man

Overview

Mega Man, true to character, is a projectile-centric fighter with an outstanding midrange zoning game. He has a remarkable toolkit, with several normal moves replaced with his Mega Buster pellet shots. His main strength is clear: Mega Buster shots (neutral attack, neutral air attack, and side tilt). Enemies in range of these shots are forced to reposition or weather the storm. Naturally, this can make playing a conventional style of neutral game difficult since he doesn’t have a “real” jab or melee-based neutral airattack.

While Mega Man’s attacks are primarily zoning tools, this doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a heavily defensive brawler. He’s much more mix-up- and setup-heavy than it seems at first glance. Instead of focusing on successfully dealing damage with every single Mega Buster pellet, Mega Man players should think two steps ahead of the opponent and focus on how their opponents react, and use that information to determine their approach. A basic example is against shield-heavy opponents: while chipping at their shields is nice, you can take a much greater advantage by feigning a Mega Buster shot and instead dash in for a grab. The persistent threat of your projectiles can be a much more effective tool than the projectiles themselves.

This goes for most of Mega Man’s projectile attacks. His side special, Crash Bomber, forces the opponent into taking an action. They have to either avoid the bomb altogether or put their shield up, at which point you can go for a grab or chip at them more with your Metal Blade. All of Mega Man’s projectile attacks add up to a strong advantage for him, as long as he’s in control of the opponent’s actions and can capitalize on them accordingly.

Mega Man has outstanding aerial mobility, so he can be hard to knock down when he’s ledge-recovering. He can wall-jump and use Rush to immediately spring back up, and his air projectiles (like up air attack, Mega Buster shots, and Metal Blade) give edge-guarding enemies incoming projectiles to deal with as Mega Man jumps back onto the stage.
