Super Smash Bros. Ultimate eGuide Incineroar

Overview

This Fire- and Dark-type Pokémon is the final evolution of Litten (after Torracat), and a newcomer in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate brawl. Incineroar’s fighting style is wrestling, so it favors high-commitment, high-reward attacks. All of its specials basically take a full second, and it poses after successful smash attacks and neutral attack combos, adding a little extra lag. On the ground, the most reliable and least risky moves are neutral attack and down tilt, with dash attacks joining the list if aimed to hit early at defenders’ front sides.

But at least it’s a high-flying wrestler. Incineroar is a relatively quick heavyweight, always ready to spring the surprise of the Alolan Whip special grab, and with surprisingly fast air attacks to back it up. This gives the feline an agile reactionary air game to bolster devastating but risky ground moves. Every air move is useful and multipurpose, but look to neutral air attack for its long hitting period and fast fall synergy, back air attack for its use as a dominating short-hopping poke, and up air attack for its combo potential.

Revenge, the down special, is a fast counter that buffs Incineroar’s next connected move. In all situations, this move can be used to absorb incoming moves for greatly reduced damage, which can help both for navigating a field of projectiles and smaller brawlers, and for stacking up the damage buff, potentially turning the next attack into a 60%+ strike.

Incineroar is heavy and hard to toss far off a stage, but eventually it’ll happen, and recovery can be a challenge from lower altitudes. Although most air specials allow more air actions afterward, only Alolan Whip travels laterally without losing altitude. Cross Chop, the up special, travels only straight up, before diving diagonally back down. This is only useful for recovery if you’ve already moved back in directly under a ledge.
