Down Special: PokÉMon Change
Anyone who wonders what it would be like to wade into battle as a Pokémon Trainer with the trusty gen one Pokémon of Pokémon Red and Blue need look no further. When selecting Pokémon Trainer, you can select a female or male Trainer, choose from different color schemes, plus select which Pokémon battles first. Pokémon Trainer her/himself doesn’t take to the field; he or she stands in the background while you control the current active Pokémon.
Playing as Pokémon Trainer therefore means basically playing as three fighters at once: the pint-sized Water-type, Squirtle; Ivysaur, the Grass/Poison-type evolution of Bulbasaur; and the hulking Fire/Flying-type Charizard, a fully evolved Charmander. The simplest way to think of Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard in the context of the team is as flyweight, middleweight, and heavyweight. With any of the Pokémon, down special prompts the Trainer to use a Poké Ball to cycle from one fighter to the next. The down special cycling order is:
Squirtle > Ivysaur > Charizard > Squirtle
Final Smash: Triple Finish
All three Pokémon combine their powers for a series of overlapping attacks. This super-effective Final Smash spews a solid Solar Beam straight across from wherever it’s activated, as well about half the way out, for some extra coverage. In close, the Whirlpool created by the unison of Pokémon powers can suck nearby opponents in.
