Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Guide › Ken

Overview

Ken Masters has specialized mechanics that faithfully represent the in-depth combat of Street Fighter IV. Like Ryu, Ken is equipped with a vast range of attacks, many of which have varying strengths depending on how the moves are executed.

In terms of weight, Ken lands at the heavier side of the spectrum. While he’s susceptible to certain juggle combos, he resists KO launchers better than most. He has an average max run compared to the rest of the cast, so he can readily approach with most of his ground-based light attacks.

Most of Ken’s move arsenal from the SF series carries over to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and is applied in his game plan similarly. A straightforward and effective strategy is to fire off a slow-moving Hadoken from range to use as cover for your engagement, then proceed with an aggressive jump-in attempt. Opening up foes lets you score high-damage combos that end in Ken’s signature fiery Shoryuken uppercut.

Ken can perform several recognizable Street Fighter combos. They’re especially powerful against grounded foes, allowing chained light attacks hit-confirmed into stronger finishers. In other words, you can poke with quick and safe attacks, committing to your high-damage combo-ender only if you’ve verified the hits. The following are sample practical combos you can do:

Ken’s Street Fighter Special-Cancel Combos

Against grounded: Crouching light kick (down tilt tap), crouching light kick, crouching medium kick canceled into Hadoken ( + attack).

Against attacker: Lv.2/3 Focus Attack (down special) released to cause crumple, then canceled into forward dash, jump, fast-falling down air attack (jumping fierce), land, Shoryuken ( + Attack [hold]).

Against airborne: Jumping light kick (up air attack) canceled into heavy Shoryuken OR jumping medium kick (neutral air attack), canceled into heavy Tatsumaki Senpukyaku.

Against shielding foe (high shield damage): Crouching light kick, crouching light kick canceled into Nata Otoshi Geri and Inazuma Kick ( + Attack [hold]). Alternatively, you can start with close light punch (up tilt tap) x2.

Against hopping foe: Close light punch, close light punch canceled into Shoryuken ( + Attack [hold]).

As a Street Fighter fighter, Ken’s move set includes unique StreetFighter special moves that can be performed with quarter-circle, half-circle, and “dragon punch” control stick motions. These reward you with higher damage and stronger attack properties.

Unique Street Fighter Mechanics

When facing a single opponent in a one-on-one match, the Street Fighters behave even more like in their home games. They automatically face their foes, and moving the control stick away from the enemy to move backward doesn’t make them turn around. Instead, they walk backward, just like in Street Fighter. This makes it much easier to execute manual-input special moves such as Tatsumaki Senpukyaku.
