Super Smash Bros. Ultimate eGuide Link

Overview

While Link doesn’t boast moves that are noticeably exceptional when it comes to speed, lag time, and mobility, Link’s move set is vast and comprehensive, with the overall package being greater than the sum of its parts.

Link has an absurd amount of options, particularly when it comes to his projectile game. He can control and limit his opponent’s safe zones, setting traps and restricting parts of the stage, giving him a strong battlefield-presence advantage.

Link shines and dominates most when he’s up against slow fighters with few air-mobility options, as he’s most dangerous when he’s given plenty of space to set up. He may struggle against fighters with fast and accessible aerial options (such as Zero Suit Samus) who can get around his trap-based projectile game.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Link doesn’t have a tether grab, since his Clawshot has been replaced by a conventional close-range grab. This gives him a close-range out-of-shield option, so this change can be viewed as a positive, although he loses the range of his hook grab (and of course, his tether recovery and “zair” attack).

Link’s Hylian Shield (the physical shield he’s holding up on his left arm) isn’t there for decoration—he can block all projectiles, including bigger ones like Cloud’s Blade Beam. As long as he’s facing the incoming projectile with his shield up (while walking, crouching, or standing still), he blocks and totally nullifies the shot!
