Super Smash Bros. Ultimate eGuide Pokémon Trainer

Overview

Brawling as Pokémon Trainer is like using a single complex fighter with multiple versions. Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard all do different things well, and you may want to swap between their abilities depending on the matchup or situation. Each is heavier than the last, which is relevant for avoiding KOs and following a match’s natural pace.

Squirtle is a fast, tiny fighter, belonging in a category with other minuscule combatants like Pichu and Villager. With the least heft, Squirtle is the easiest to knock offstage of the Trainer’s options, but also has the speediest set of moves and movement options. Withdraw and Waterfall give it solid recovery and mobility, and Squirtle can even wall-jump and wall-cling on sheer surfaces.

Ivysaur is slower, but has great multi-hit pokes and incredible power and coverage aiming straight up midstage. Ivysaur’s up tilt, up smash, Bullet Seed, and midstage Vine Whip all totally dominate the airspace above this Grass-type fighter. Ivysaur’s grab also has reach that’s well above average.

Charizard is the daunting heavyweight of the trio, with overwhelming strength and range on attacks. Charizard is the hardest to outright KO with its bulk, but the easiest to combo against. Putting its wings to good use, Charizard also has a triple jump. Of its powerful attacks, side smash and up tilt are particularly noteworthy for their great hitboxes and priority. Charizard’s downsides are obvious: it’s slower and more predictable than its partners, with laggier attacks.
