Super Smash Bros. Ultimate eGuide Simon / Richter

Overview

The family line that serves as Dracula’s timeless scourge swoops into action in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate! Simon Belmont is the most legendary of the vampire hunters, the forebear against whom all future whip-swingers are judged. And Richter, one of those descendants who blazed his own distinct trail in the annals of nosferatu-nullifying, is Simon’s Echo Fighter, sharing the same moves and strengths. They even have their classic Castlevania series jump hangtime, floating at the apex of their jump arcs. Beware when using directional air dodges to avoid incoming attacks while airborne, though, since the Belmonts have far more lag after angled air dodges than most fighters.

The vampire hunters have incredible reach with their whip-swinging attacks, and tremendous knockback power if aiming to hit with the morning star at the end of the chain. But with the whip’s lengthy windup, Simon and Richter’s attacks tend to be slower to hit than most other fighters’. Their neutral attack hits about as fast as most fighters’ side tilts, their tilt attacks are about as slow as most fighters’ uncharged smash attacks, and their smash attacks (uncharged) and grab attempts are among the slowest in the game.

Success with the Belmont bros. comes down to making effective use of their unique special moves and enormous whip-swinging range to keep adversaries at bay, warding them away from point-blank range with tossed Holy Water, Axes, and Crosses, while making liberal use of max-range whip strikes.
