Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Guide › Robin

Overview

Robin has access to a plethora of incredible attacks and spells, generally much more powerful than other fighters’ abilities. However, his power advantages come at a price: their uses are limited.

At the beginning of a match, Robin is equipped with the Bronze Sword and full Tome Gauges, with the Levin Sword becoming accessible as time passes (after 10 seconds). For most air attacks and for all of his smash attacks, the Levin Sword provides extra range, damage, and other noticeable advantages over the Bronze Sword.

Robin’s overall game plan is to zone out enemies with intelligent use of his ranged spells in order to level and store his Thunder spell. Once he gains space, either by connecting with Arcfire or knocking away enemies with his powerful Levin Sword attacks, he can begin charging up his neutral special, granting him access to Arcthunder and Thoron. When applied properly, Arcthunder provides effective offensive setups thanks to its hit effects and area coverage.

Like most power-up strategies, you’ll want to optimize your attack sequences by always considering your charge time. You must also be particularly attentive to your opponent’s offense, since your defensive options are limited (you only have a certain amount of Elwind recovery attempts), and foes are likely to rush you while you’re trying to charge.

Equipment Discard Mechanics

The Levin Sword can be used eight times before it’s discarded, at which point you have to wait 10 seconds for the gauge to refill. During this waiting period, performing smash attacks and directional midair attacks slightly increases the gauge (basically, attacks that benefit from the Levin Sword). Additionally, KO’ing an opponent grants an instant 50% gauge while you don’t have the Levin Sword.

Each of Robin’s spells (special moves and neutral attack finishers) has a Tome associated with it. Neutral special costs Thunder Gauge, up special costs Wind Gauge, side special costs Fire Gauge, and down special costs Dark Gauge. However, it may be simpler to remember how many times you can execute a certain special move before its Tome is discarded.

See the Note table under Robin’s Special Moves section for details.

After discard, Thunder, Wind, and Fire Tomes require 10 seconds to be restored. Dark Tome requires 30 seconds.

As a general rule, the remaining uses of Tomes and Levin Swords don’t reset until they’re all used up or Robin gets KO’d.

Equipment As Interactable Items

When Robin discards Tomes and Levin Swords after using them up, they can hurt opponents they hit as they’re flung away (with damage depending on the item’s velocity). Furthermore, they behave as items you can pick up and hold! You need to be quick, though, as they disappear after a brief window. With some planning and coordination, you can set up some interesting scenarios using your discarded weaponry, as long as you grab them in time. For instance, after depleting your Levin Sword gauge from a side smash attack, Robin tosses his Levin Sword behind him, so you can jump back and hit the Grab command to pick it up. Now you have a quick projectile at your disposal that you can use to set up an offense without committing to charging up Thunder!

Discarded items deal roughly 3-6% damage.
