Mario’s younger twin brother brings his own spin on their brawling style. Mario’s quicker and compact, while the taller Luigi has longer range on attacks and more hang time during jumps. He’s also a slippery customer on defense, with extra pushback when shielding attacks, and the ability the crouch-walk backward or forward, which is not only hilarious-looking, but capable of dodging underneath threats with the low profile. And speaking of hilarious, his down taunt is a woeful-looking little kick that’s actually capable of launching anyone it hits into prime juggle position.
Luigi has many other moves that distinguish him from his big bro. Down tilt and forward air attack behave something like linking moves in Street Fighter, while also having a small chance to knock standing targets off their feet. Green Missile is a strong, lateral torpedo attack with its own small chance to explode with unexpected momentum. His grab puts his Poltergust pack to good use, giving the grab exceptional reach, at the cost of speed. Fireball, Green Missile, and dashing grab attempts allow Luigi to attack comfortably from midrange, and his fireball is better at covering short hop airspace and interfering with offstage recovery than Mario’s. And, when the opportunity arises, Luigi can string together powerful juggle combos, thanks to his flexible up tilt, down tilt, forward air attack, down air attack, and Luigi Cyclone attacks.
