Super Smash Bros. Ultimate eGuide Duck Hunt

Overview

This tandem works together to put each of their distinct advantages to good use. The dog gives Duck Hunt decent mobility and the ability to wall-jump, while the duck grants far-reaching, sharp beak attacks, not to mention saving the dog’s bacon over pits with the Duck Jump up special.

Many of Duck Hunt’s attacks work like unique projectiles. All of the smashes are barrages from an NES Zapper light gun, striking all around the duck and dog and making them cower while dealing damage to their opponents. The Trick Shot, Clay Shooting, and Wild Gunman specials all offer different ways to put variable projectile threats on-screen, almost like moving land mines you can choose to detonate at will.

The quirkiness of Duck Hunt’s attacks is both strength and weakness. There’s nothing quite like Trick Shot, for example, which is both a grenade-type move and a bomb you can shift around the screen with secondary shots, even while performing other actions. But the specials require some premeditation and hard reads to use well, and the unique zapping smash attacks don’t always hit like you’d expect them to.
