Sonic is a unique fighter, not only because he’s the speediest brawler in the game, but because his fighting style vastly differs from most of the cast. He’s most effectively played with a bait-and-punish fighting style, dashing around at high speeds and capitalizing on the enemy’s whiffed attacks.
Naturally, he has the fastest dash speed in the game, so he’s effective at punishing whiffed attacks from range. He also skids to a stop faster than almost anyone. He goes from zero to sixty and sixty to zero like nobody’s business, allowing him to run and immediately stop, possibly transitioning into a tilt or smash attack. He even has a wall jump that can aid him during his ledge-recovery phase.
One of Sonic’s strengths is his ability to condition foes with his various spinning attacks. Since so many of his varying attacks look identical, it can be difficult for opponents to predict what Sonic is going to do. His Spin Charge, Spin Dash, and Homing Attack all begin with Sonic transitioning into ball form. Spin Charge and Spin Dash even have varying follow-ups Sonic can transition into. Sonic’s foes also have to fear his dashing grab once they’re conditioned to shield against his spinning rolling attacks.
Sonic has a surprisingly strong defensive game. His ground attacks are quick with solid range, his up air is a lightning-fast double-sided aerial that can be used to punish enemies right after you block their attacks, and many of his special moves grant him some intangibility, such as Spin Dash and Spring Jump.
