ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES

ONE STEP LEFT HEAD KICK

Level 2—Both Standing, Striking Range

Counter with this quick kick and you can devastate your opponent or even pop a one-hit knockdown.

STRONG RIGHT HOOK

Level 3—Single Collar Tie

Use this Level 3 power shot to rock your opponent and help you move to the Muay Thai Clinch for the finish.

CRUSHING LEFT/RIGHT KNEE

Level 2—Muay Thai Clinch Cage, Offense

Pushing your opponent up against the cage is where you want to be. Posture back in the clinch and drive these knees to his face.

STRENGTHS

  • Aggressive style
  • World-class experience

Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva is a very experienced Muay Thai fighter and is awesome in the clinch. Wade in with kicks and punches and tie up your opponent in the Single Collar Tie.

Pummel to a Muay Thai Clinch (it’s even better with your opponent’s back against the cage) and punish your foe with clinch punches, elbows, and knees. Defend against transitions and keep the fight in the clinch, where Silva is world-class.

He’s not a grappler or a wrestler—he is a Muay Thai specialist whose offensive and defensive attributes can be 6–10 points better once the fight goes to close range. From kicking range, protect your head and launch each of your two Level 2 kicks to work your way in.

WEAKNESSES

  • Prone to KO
  • Ground game

Get Silva on the ground—he is the least dangerous there. A good game plan is to strike some from the outside to test his chin early, then counter with a takedown when he charges forward with strikes.

Silva on his back is not very dangerous (he hasn’t submitted anyone in over a decade), and most fighters have the grappling advantage.

He’s vulnerable to ground-and-pound but has decent submission defense, so maintain dominant position and grind it out on top.

If you end up back on the feet, stay out of the clinch and repeat. Strike and shoot for the takedown.
