ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES
LEFT QUICK SUPERMAN PUNCH
Level 3—Both Standing, Striking Range
This is a jab on steroids, a Level 3 straight leading left. Use it as a quick counter—often.
GSP’S HEAD KICK
Level 3—Both Standing, Striking Range
Kyokushin karate at its finest leads to KOs. Just ask Matt Hughes.
LEG SWEEP DOUBLE LEG
TAKEDOWN
Level 3—Single Collar Tie
This is GSP’s best takedown, and he drops to it from standing or any neutral or offensive clinch to land in Side Control. If your opponent clinches, respond with this.
STRENGTHS
- Athleticism
- Very well rounded
- Discipline
Georges “Rush” St-Pierre is (GSP) one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world, and one of the best overall athletes.
His strength lies in his ability to dominate both standing and on the ground, and you’ll be hard pressed to make him tired because he has a 90 Cardio rating.
He has tremendous boxing and karate, and his takedowns are
some of the best in the game.
Blast away with punches and kicks, then take down your opponent and impose your will. The progression called out in the “Ultimate Techniques” section is an effective combination of punches to a kick to a takedown.
It’s very frustrating for your opponent to eat some strikes from GSP only to be taken down and controlled on the mat.
WEAKNESSES
- Clinch strikes
- Working off his back
To say that GSP has a weakness must be done by crinkling up your face and leading with: “Well I guess you could say….” If you had to pick your poison, you’d want to take him down and make him work off his back.
Get on top and to the ground-and-pound, blocking his transitions along the way. St-Pierre’s game is to strike standing, then take you down and keep control while he picks you apart from the top.
Keep your head protected from his superfast strikes, and clinch if he starts to overwhelm you on your feet.
Land some good shots in the clinch, where he is not quite as strong, but be wary of takedowns.
