STRENGTHS

  • Well rounded
  • Conditioning
  • Ground-and-pound

John “The Hitman” Hathaway comes from the brawlin’ United Kingdom, but his focus is good wrestling, ring control, and solid ground-and-pound TKO victories. His only loss has come by decision, so he has proven that he is resilient in the ring and is a well-rounded fighter.

Rear naked chokes are his bread-and-butter submission, usually set up by the opponent’s defensive scrambles when under fire or rocked.

He has great takedowns, so get on top and destroy your opponent with Level 2 elbows in Side Control and Mount. All fights start on the feet, but Hathaway’s strength comes into play when he gets his hands on his opponent. Inch into the clinch and work for the takedown from there—his Level 2 double leg is his best.

WEAKNESSES

  • Speed
  • Stand-up game
  • Submission defense

Like most well-rounded fighters, Hathaway does a good job controlling opponents from the clinch to ground. Where he is the weakest is from striking range. He’s got more holes in his game there and is vulnerable from there.

He has yet to be knocked out in the real life Octagon, but in this game, the game plan against him has got to be kick, kick, kick. There are plenty of great strikers in the division, so even if your fighter isn’t a kicker, use stepping and lunging punches to close distance, then get back.

Pick Hathaway apart from the outside like this to make it extremely difficult for him to get close enough to clinch. Stuff his takedowns, but if he gets you down, attack with submissions. He is great at the ground-and-pound but can be caught in submissions because he has a poor (for a ground guy) defensive Submission rating of 72.
