ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES

OVERHAND RIGHT

Level 2—Both Standing, Striking Range

Ortiz throws this crushing right hook with great speed, and the manner in which he lowers his posture while throwing the blow makes him difficult to catch and counter during the strike.

LEFT/RIGHT STOMACH KNEE

Level 2—Double Underhook Cage, Offense

Buckle opponents with these hard clinch knees against the cage. Ortiz has decent control in the clinch, so score with these big knees whenever you want to slow down and work over an elusive striker.

LEFT/RIGHT ELBOW

Level 3—Open Guard, Top

These crushing elbows are Ortiz’s favorite form of ground-and-pound. He doesn’t need to advance out of Open Guard to land these big technique strikes, but they come with greater force in Half Guard or Mount.

STRENGTHS

  • Wrestling
  • Conditioning
  • Ground-and-pound

“The Huntington Beach Bad Boy,” Tito Ortiz, has had a long and storied career inside the Octagon, having fought and risen to the rank of champion in the UFC light heavyweight division.

Ortiz calls upon his strong wrestling background to bring his opponents to the ground with his dominant takedowns and strong clinch grappling.

Once he brings his adversaries to the mat, he wastes little time in working them over with brutal ground-and-pound.

His favorite strikes from the top include heavy elbows that he postures up to bring down with tremendous force from Open Guard, Half Guard, and Mount.

Use his strong takedowns and ground grappling ability to force his opponents to the floor, then posture up and brutalize them with heavy elbows from the top.

Just keep dishing out the punishment with Ortiz’s dominant ground-and-pound until you lock in the TKO win.

WEAKNESSES

  • Speed

Ortiz’s ground-and-pound is not something you want to deal with, but his poor footwork and general lack of speed on the feet make it difficult for “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” to secure the takedown.

Stay mobile when fighting against him and don’t allow him to close within clinching distance if you can help it.

Score with quick combinations from the outside to keep him at bay and unable to clinch up or take you down.

Shut down his grappling game to nullify his strongest brand of offense as you pick him apart on the feet with superior footwork that sets up blistering strike combinations.

He is unskilled at securing submissions, so anticipate and block his heavy elbows from the top as you work at improving and escaping from the bottom whenever he succeeds in dragging you to the mat.
