STRENGTHS
- Champion experience
- Size
- Knockout power
Anthony “Rumble” Johnson is a big, strong welterweight (he walks around at well over 200 pounds) with a solid chin and great footwork to match. He’s never been knocked out in a fight and has scored some dominating victories over good fighters in the division.
His wrestling is great, matched by his takedown and takedown defense. Keep it on the feet, or even strike in the clinch. Johnson’s greatest power is in the stand-up game and his kicks. Careful with his kicks, though; they expend a great deal of energy.
Work your way into the pocket to take advantage of his speedy, powerful punches, and punctuate your combos with his Level 3 Right Over Hook, which blasts for big damage. Stuff your opponent’s takedown attempts, but if it does go to the ground get a dominant position and lay down some ground-and-pound.
WEAKNESSES
- Ground game
- Cardio
With all of his dynamic striking techniques, you want to take Johnson off of his feet. He’s got good wrestling, and it’s OK if he takes you down because that is where he is most vulnerable. Work into a guard position and go for a submission.
When you’re on the ground, make him work and test his cardio. He’s a strong guy, but if he gets tired and can’t throw punches and keeps his guard down, you’re in much better shape.
Make no mistake, he is a very good fighter. But he is not going to try to end the fight by submission on the ground—if he stays on the ground he’s going to strike you. Clinch to defend against the ground-and-pound and attack with a submission.
