ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES

RIGHT FLYING HEAD KICK

Level 1 - Both Standing, Striking Range

Cub Swanson has some Level 2 strikes from his feet, but this kick covers some extra ground to your opponent.

JUDO HIP THROW TO SIDE CONTROL, TOP

Level 1 - Double Underhook, Defense

Whether you’ve got the underhooks or your opponent does, Swanson’s got a throw that will land him in Side Control with a lot of options. This one reverses things from the defensive position.

DIRECT CATCH TO ARMBAR FROM THE TOP

Level 2 - North/South, Top

A quick transition from Side Control to the North/South position, this armbar is a Level 2 sub.

STRENGTHS

  • Grappling
  • Training Camp
  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt

Cub Swanson is known for his BJJ, but he is no slouch in the striking category either. He’s got good defense all the way around and has great takedown from even defensive positions.

Once on the ground, he can flow nicely from position to position, and there are submission options at every turn.

But, every fight starts on the feet, so use Swanson’s kicking to rock opponents. He’s got very easy head kicks to catch in his arsenal, and Level 2 punches to go with them.

Stay out in kicking range and use the lunging techniques to wade in with powerful blows to set up the takedown. Don’t force it though—no need—and take advantage of Swanson’s great striking skill set.

WEAKNESSES

  • Clinch
  • Power

Swanson has finished some fights by KO over the years, but he can be vulnerable to Muay Thai.

He was notoriously knocked out in seconds by Jose Aldo’s running/ flying knee, and his lowest ratings are in the clinch.

He’s a good straight-ahead striker, but isn’t especially fast with his footwork, so his big strikes will land him in the pocket, vulnerable to counter strikes and clinches.

Sway out of the way of his combinations and counter with a combination of your own.

He has no Level 3 techniques in his repertoire and can’t submission switch despite the BJJ advantage. He’s not going to stop folks with a couple of blows. It will probably be a grind.
