ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES

LEFT ELBOW

Level 2—Salaverry

Take the fight to the ground and advance to this sweet position, then drop slicing elbows.

DOUBLE LEG TAKEDOWN WHILE GETTING UP

Level 2—Up/Down Near, Bottom

Your opponent wants up? Too bad. Take it back down to the mat.

DIRECT CATCH TO DOWNWARD REAR NAKED CHOKE

Level 3—Back Mount, Top

Krauss gets a rear naked choke from all ground positions from the back. This one’s from the Back Mount.

STRENGTHS

  • Boxing
  • Finishing ability

Pascal “Panzer” Krauss is another big welterweight. He hasn’t lost in the Octagon yet, and most of his wins have come by submission. He has good striking and also a good clinch, but get the fight to the ground and control your opponent there. Get the Mount—or even the mounted crucifix—and ground-and-pound to set up the submission.

Krauss has good kimuras and submissions from Side Control, but his Level 3 rear naked chokes from any position on your opponent’s back are his real specialty.

Hurt opponents in the Mount and they’ll scramble and probably give you their back in their escape—that’s your chance. Sink in the rear naked choke on a hurt opponent and the mini game becomes less “dot race” and more “dominate.”

WEAKNESSES

  • Takedowns
  • Clinch grappling
  • Speed

Krauss is a well-rounded fighter with no true holes in his game. He’s not the fastest guy in the division, so take advantage of your speed advantage if you have it. If Krauss starts to overwhelm you with strikes, clinch to nullify his advantage. Stay busy, though; he is a great clinch striker, so take him down and land on top position.

Defensively, he is quite good in every category except takedowns, so even when he’s on the ground he’s not helpless.

Most of his submissions come from the dominant positions with him on top and in control.Impose your will from the top position with ground striking because, despite his decent defensive rating here, he can’t do as much damage to you from his back—he has no subs from his Open Guard in his repertoire.
