STRENGTHS
- Improved striking
- Ground-and-pound
- Former NCAA champion
“The Filipino Wrecking Machine,” Mark Muñoz, is a rising UFC middleweight contender with knockout power in his hands and superior grappling skills.
Most known for his overwhelming ground-and-pound, Muñoz uses his powerful standing strikes conservatively as he looks to move into the clinch or set up a diving takedown that plants his opponent on the mat.
Either way, his goal is to bring his opponent into the grappling game, where he can use his great strength and tremendous ground-and-pound to deliver crushing hammer fists from the top.
Muñoz is also strong in the clinch, both at controlling and striking in the position, and at using the clinch to bring his rivals to the ground with powerful trips and throws.
Take advantage of his strong grappling ability and make use of his heavy hands at every chance to punish his opponents with his unstoppable striking onslaught.
WEAKNESSES
- Kicks
Muñoz is a dangerous takedown artist with heavy hands, but his lack of speed and poor footwork can be exploited by experienced striking specialists.
He has poor kicking ability as well, so try to capitalize on this weakness by landing heavy leg kicks from the outside.
Mix in head kicks if he is trying to counter grapple, punishing him with other long, quick strikes and then quickly moving out of his countering range.
Don’t clinch or grapple with Muñoz—he’s too dangerous in these areas of the fight game, and he’s most vulnerable to being rocked by standing strikes.
Use strong takedown defense to keep the fight standing, and be conservative with your striking game to maintain the ability to defend against his powerful takedowns and grappling game.
